文化の勉強:文学 (Culture studies: literature

Viime aikoina ei mitään edellisistä viikoista poikkeavaa ole paljoa tapahtunut, mutta eilen oli oikein iloinen päivä. Asuntolallamme suoritettiin ötökänkarkoitus, minkä vuoksi jouduimme olemaan pois huoneistamme muutaman tunnin ajan. Lähdimme suomalaisten kesken sitä pakoon elokuviin katsomaan La La Landin. Elokuvateatterin istuimet todellakin ovat paremmat kuin mihin Suomessa olen tottunut (koska tuolien välissä on enemmän tilaa ja koska selkänoja on korkeampi) ja tällä kertaa yllätyimme kätevistä tarjottimista, jotka saimme naposteltaville. Tarjottimen sai vielä kätevästi kiinni tuolin juomapidikkeeseen. Elokuvan jälkeen kävimme hampurilais-aterialla ja pyörimme kaupungilla, kunnes oli turvallista palata asuntolalle.

[There has not been anything too much different recently but yesterday was such a happy day. They had of insectd at the dormitory which meant we couldn't be in our rooms for some hours. We Finnish people escaped that and went to the movies to see La La Land. The seats at the cinema were surely more comfortable than the ones I am used to in Finland (because there is more space between seats and because the backs were higher) and this time we got surprised for the trays we got for our snacks. And the trays could be attached to the drink holders of the seats. After the movie we went for hamburgers and spent time going around until it was safe to return to the dormitory.

Illalla lähdin vielä tanssimaan. Lähdin katsastamaan itselleni uuden paikan, jota minulle mainostettiin muutama viikko sitten. Paikka oli pieni, mutta se tuntui vain edesauttavan mukavan ilmapiirin syntyyn kaikkien läsnäolijoiden kesken. Olin aiemmin nähnyt heistä muutaman, mutta en ollut kummemmin jutellut kenenkään kanssa eilistä ennen. Kuitenkin he kaikki olivat todella ystävällisiä ja illan lopuksi halasivat ja saattoivat jopa hissille asti lähtiessäni. En voinut kuin hymyillä koko kotimatkan.

[In the evening I left to dance. I went to check a new place for me to that I was told about some weeks ago. The place was quite small but it just seemed to make everyone to be one group having fun together. Beforehand I had seen a few of those people but had hardly spoken to any of them. But still everyone was so friendly and when I was leaving they hugged me and even came to see me off to the elevator. I could nothing but smile on my way home.]

Viime lukukauden kulttuurin opinnoista on avaamatta enää kirjallisuuden kurssimme. Opettajamme oli sama austraalialainen opettaja kuin teeseremonian kurssillamme, mutta japanilaisia opiskelijoita oli paljon enemmän vaihto-opiskelijoita. Me eurooppalaistet vaihto-opiskelijat sekä kaksi muuta vaihtaria olimme noin yksi kolmasosa osallistujista kurssilla, joka oli sekoitus englannin- ja japaninkieltä. Opettaja kuitenkin puhui lähinnä englanniksi. Kurssin aikana luimme japanilaisia novelleja, jotka löytyivät myös englanniksi kännettyinä kirjasta Speculative Japan 3. Ensimmäisellä tunnilla muodostimme pienryhmät, joissa oli sekä japanilaisia että vaihto-opiskelijoita ja niissä syvennyimme kukin ryhmä omaan novelliimme. Joka viikko yksi ryhmä esitteli siksi viikoksi luetun tarinan taustatietoja ja johti keskustelua kyseisestä tarinasta. Itse olin kuvitellut, että kirjallisuuden kurssilla paneudutaan ennemminkin perinteisiin japanilaisiin tarinoihin, mutta lukemamme novellit olivat jotakin ihan muuta ja monesti hyvin hämmentäviä omasta mielestäni.

[The only culture course from last semester I still have not explaibed is our literature class. We had the same Australian teacher who was teaching also tea ceremony for us but there were a lot more Japanese students. The European exchange students plus two other exchange students were one third of the students on the course that was a mix of English and Japanese. Though the teacher spoke mostly in English. During the course we read Japanese short stories that were translated into English in the book Speculative Japan 3. On the first lesson we formed small groups that had both Japanese and exchange students in thoem and in each group we concentrated on the specific story. Every week one group was presenting some background information about their story that everyone read and they were leading the conversations about it. I had thought that we would read some traditional Japanese stories but the short stories we read were something quute different and many times I found them confusing.]

Toisen lukukauden alku alkaa lähestyä. Viime viikolla saimme jo lukujärjestykset, jotka muuten ovat kopio viime lukujärjestyksestämme, mutta kulttuurin kurssit puuttuivat. Ajattelin kokeilla paria uutta kurssia, mutta nähtäväksi jää, sopivatko ne minulle kuitenkaan. Katsotaan ensimmäisten tuntien jälkeen. Asuntolammekin herää taas eloon, kun uudrt vaihto-opiskelijat saapuvat tänään Kiinasta, Koreasta ja Taiwanista. Uudet japanilaisetkin muuttavat ensi viikolla. Mutta vielä saa nauttia lomasta jonkin aikaa ennen koulunpenkille palaamista.

[The beginning of the second semester is getting closer. We got new timetables last week and they look like the first semester except that there are no cultural classes. I thought of trying a couple of new courses but cannot say yet if they are okay for me. Have to wait until the first lessons. Also our dormitory is getting more lively again when the new exchange students from China, Korea and Taiwan are coming today. New Japanese students will move in next week, too. But I still have some time to enjoy the vacation.]
