タンゴ、キャナルシティ、親切な人 (tango, Canal City, kind people)

Maanantaina illalla liityin kaverini mukaan tangoa opettelemaan. Viikoittainen tango-tunti pyörii vapaaehtoisen opettajan vetämänä. Suuri osa tangotunnille osallistuneista puhui hyvin ranskaa, sillä he kävivät samoja ranskan tunteja yliopistolla. Tuntui hieman erikoiselta kommunikoidan japanilaisten kanssa ranskaksi. Mutta nautin tunnista ja siitä, että pääsen viimeinkin oppimaan myös lavatansseja. Toivon, että aikani riittää jatkossakin siellä käymiseen.

[I joined my friend for a tango class on Monday. The class teacher is teaching voluntarily. Almost everyone at the tango lesson were able to speak very good French because they took the same French classes at the university. I found it somewhat interesting to talk French with Japanese people. I enjoyed the class and the fact that I am finally able to learn some ballroom dances. I hope I will have time also in the future to go there to learn more.]

Tiistaina oli ensimmäinen teeseremonian tuntimme. Käytimme koko puolitoista tuntisen lähinnä siihen, etttä harjoittelimme oikeanlaista teehuoneeseen menoa ja siellä liikkumista isommissa ja pienemmissä ryhmissä. Kaikella tuntuu olevan niin paljon merkitystä harmonian, kunnioittamisen, perinteiden ja etikettien vuoksi. Esimerkiksi tatamien reunojen yli astutaan aina vasemmalla jalalla. Teeseremonian tunnin jälkeen kävimme testaamassa kampuksen hampurilaisravintolan. Kaikkea sitä täältä löytääkin...

(On Tuesday we had our first tea ceremony class. We spent the whole 1,5 hours basically to practice the right way to enter a tea room and how to move there.  Everything seems to have so much meaning because of the harmony, the respect, tradition and the etiquette. For example, you have to step over the line of tatamis always with the left foot. After the class we tested the hamburger restaurant at the campus. It is amazing what we can find here...]

Tänään japaninkielen oppituntien jälkeen kävimme porukalla lentokentällä hankkimassa työluvat. Osa vaihtareista haluaa toimia "teacher assistanteina" japanilaisille opiskelijoille kannustamaan heitä puhumaan englantia. Työluvat saimme todella nopeasti, joten lähdin pyörähtämään Canal Cityssä, josta olin jo monesti kuullut, mutta jossa en ollut vielä käynyt. Ostoskeskus, jonka keskellä virtaa pieni joki ja joka on osittain ulkoilmassa ostoskeskuksen sisälläkin. Sadevesi melkein kasteli sisälläkin, sillä tänään on satanut kaatamalla koko päivän.  Matkalla Canal Cityyn pysähdyimme hetkeksi toisen suomalaisvaihtarin kanssa tarkistamaan Hakatan asemalla, mihin suuntaan lähdemme liikkeelle. Siinä seisoessamme vanhahko japanilainen mies tuli kysymään, mihin olemme matkalla ja hän opasti meidät oikeaan suuntaan japanin ja englannin kielensekoituksella ja kehui myös tiikeri-paitaani. Ihmiset täällä ovat niin ystävällisiä ja auttamisen haluisia, vaikka yhteinen kieli takkuaisikin. Hieno paikka olla vaihto-oppilaana!

[Today after the Japanese lessons we went to the airport to get permissions to work here. Some of the exchange students want to be teacher assistants for Japanese students to improve their English skills amd make them more confident to speak it. We got the permissions very fast so I went to see Canal City which I had heard about but which I still had not seen. It is a shopping mall with a small river inside it and some parts of the mall are not actually inside so that the heavy rain today could be seen and felt also inside. On our way to Canal City we stopped for a while to check which way to take from the Hakata station when an old Japanese man came to ask where we are heading to. He advised us with the mix of Japanese and English and even commented my tiger shirt. People here are so nice and helpful. What a great place to be for exchange!]

Ja mainittakoon jälleen kerran asuntolamme aula. Se on todellakin mukava paikka, sillä sinne eksyy japanilaisia ja ulkomaalaisia opiskelijoita kouluhommia tekemään tai muuten vain oleskelemaan. Tulee japanin ohella opittua myös vietnamia, koreaa ja kiinaa.

[And let me mention once again the lobby of the dorm. It really is a nice place since it gathers up both Japanese and exchange students to do their homework or just chilling otherwise. I am learning also some Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese.]

野球試合 (baseball game)

Lauantaina oli tiedossa Fukuokan yliopiston pesäpallo-ottelu toista Kyushun yliopistoa vastaan. Lähdimme asuntolalta pienellä vaihtariporukalla ja menimme ensin koululle yhteiseen aloitushetkeen. Saimme Fukuokan yliopiston t-paidat sekä pitkulaiset ilmapallot kannustusta varten. Jo pelkkä aloitustuokio oli kokemus itsessään, kun kannustusjoukkojen johtajat esittivät numeroita ja harjoittelimme yhdessä kannustushuutoja ja -lauluja.

[On Saturday there was a baseball match between Fukuoka University and one other university on Kyushu island. I left from the dorm with some exchange students and first we went to school for a common introduction. We got t-shirts of our university and balloons to clap with. Even the introduction session was a big experience when the leaders of the cheering team performed different numbers and we practiced songs and yelling for the match.]

Meillä oli bussikuljetus stadionille, missä sain todeta, että kannustuskulttuuri todellakin on erilainen kuin Suomessa. Kummankin yliopiston yleisö tunnusti omilla katsomonpuoliskoillaan tiimiänsä yhtenäisissä paidoissa ja omilla lauluillaan. Ja kumpikin yliopisto oli tuonut paikan päälle myös oman orkesterinsa säestämään ja rytmittämään ja kannustus oli jatkuvaa koko pelin läpi. Ottelu meni todella tiukaksi, kun viimeinen lyönti jäi ratkaisevaksi, mutta lopulta jouduimme tyytymään häviöön.

[We went to the stadium by buses where I got to realize that cheering for the team is quite different than in Finland. The audience was divided in two and both sides were wearing t-shirts for their universities and they were singing and yelling all the time. Both universities had also brought their orchestras there. The match was exciting but in the end our team lost.]

阿蘇山と熊本 (Mt. Aso and Kumamoto)

昨日友達と日阿蘇山に行きたかった。４月に地震でしたから、本当に難しかったよ。でも景色はとてもきれいで、みんなは楽しみにしました。

Eilen oli vapaapäivä syyspäivän tasauksen vuoksi. (Minkälie tähden sekin on täällä vapaa..?) Minut kysyttiin mukaan automatkalle määränpäänä Aso-vuori Kyushu-saaren keskellä. Kaveriporukkamme japanilainen opiskelija vuokrasi auton, jolla ajoimme Kumamoton kaupungin läpi kohti vuorta. Täysin varoittamatta tie edessämme oli poikki huhtikuussa tapahtuneen voimakkaan maanjäristyksen vuoksi. Käänsimme auton ympäri ja koetimme löytää toisen reitin. Jouduimme ajelemaan pieniä mutkittelevia vuoristoteitä ristiin rastiin, sillä useat tiet olivat yhä poissa käytöstä järistyksen jäljiltä. Meidät käännytettiin useita kertoja ilman ohjeita siitä, miten Aso-vuorelle pääsisi.

[Yesterday was free because of the autumnal equinox. (I wonder why that is free here..) I was asked to join a trip to Mt. Aso in the middle of the Kyushu island. The Japanese student of our group had rented a car and we drove through the city of Kumamoto toward our destination. Suddenly the road was cut due to the heavy earthquake that happened in April. We turned around and tried to find another way. We had to drive small mountain roads here and there because many roads were out of order because of the earthquake. The workmen made us do u-turns without telling us how to get to Mt. Aso.]

Vuoristomaisemat olivat kuitenkin henkeäsalpaavia, vaikka näkyvyyteen vaikutti massiiviset sumulautat vuorten rinteillä. Yksistään nämä maisemat saivat koko reissun tuntumaan tulemisen arvoiselta. Lopulta jopa löysimme tielle, joka kartan mukaan kiipeää Aso-vuoren huippua kohti. Noin 10 kilometrin päässä määränpäästämme meitä kohtasi melkoinen näky. Asfalttitie oli halkeillut ja katkennut järistyksen seurauksena ja suuret maamassat olivat vyöryneet satoja metrejä alarinteeseen. Emme osanneet kuvitellakaan, millaista sillä paikalla oli ollut huhtikuussa kun kaikki oli tapahtunut...

[The landscape on the mountains were breathtaking even though we could not always see that well due to the mist. That view alone made all the trip feel worth of coming. Finally we even found a road that was supposed to take all the way to the top of Mt. Aso. We had about 10 kilometers left when we faced quite a sight. The road made of asphalt was cracked and cut due to the earthquake and a lot of the ground had flowed hundreds of meters downhills. We couldn't even imagine how it was there when it all happened...]

Jouduimme jättämään vuoren huipulla käynnin sikseen ja päätimme palata takaisin Kumamoton kaupunkiin tapaamaan mukanamme olleen englantilaisen vaihtarin edellisenä päivänä saapunutta ystävää. Käytössä olevan tien löytäminen takaisin kaupunkiin vaikutti kuitenkin olevan yhtä haastavaa kuin vuorelle tuovan tien löytäminen. Ajoimme paikasta paikkaan välillä ohittaen pahasti vaurioituneita rakennuksia. Ties kuinka monetta kertaa u-käännöstä tehdessämme saimme viimeinkin työmiehiltä tiedon siitä, mitä kautta pääsemme takaisin.

[We had to give up reaching the mountain and decided to get back to the city of Kumamoto to meet a friend of one of us. Finding a road back seemed to be as difficult as finding a road to the mountain. We kept driving from place to place an sometimes passed by buildings that were really damaged half a year ago. When we once again made a u-turn we were finally advised which road to choose.]

Ystävämme kaverin tapaaminen jäi lyhyeksi, sillä olimme ajelleet monta tuntia vuoristossa ja meidän piti ehtiä ennen kymmentä takaisin Fukuokaan palauttamaan auto. Päivä kului pitkälti autossa istuen, mutta olimme kaikki erittäin tyytyväisiä mukaan lähdöstä.

[The time for meeting the friend of our friend was quite short since ee were driving for so many hours and we havd to come back to Fukuoka before ten o'clock to return the car. Most of the day we spent sitting in the car but all of us were happy we left to that journey.]

Settling down, struggling with the language

Eilinen taifuuni päätti jättää Fukuokan rauhaan pahimman myrskyn osalta, vaikka tuuli olikin aika kova. Teeseremonian opettajamme kuitenkin asuu saarella, eikä lauttaliikenne kulkenut aamupäivästä normaalisti, joten tuntimme peruttiin. Koululle kuitenkin päädyimme myöhemmin iltapäivällä japanilaisen arkkitehtuurin ja asumisen kurssin ensimmäiselle tunnille. Tunti oli leppoisa ja me vain keskustelimme englanniksi siitä, minkälaisia japanilaiset ja länsimaalaiset talot ovat.

[The typhoon decided not to come to Fukuoka with the full power but the wind was pretty strong yesterday. But since our teacher of the tea ceremony course lives on an island and because the ferries' departure was unsure in the morning, our class was cancelled. Nevertheless, we had to go to the university later in the afternoon for the first lesson of the course of Japanese architecture and housing. It was not too tough since we only discussed in English how Japanese and Western houses are like.]

Tämän päiväinen ilma oli todella ihana: ei ollut yhtään kosteaa ja lämpötilakin kipusi vain 25 asteen tienoille. Lisää näitä, kiitos! Kieliopin kurssin sisältö on edelleen minulle tuttua ja verraittain helppoa. Mutta uutta sanastoa tulee koko ajan lisää ja sen takia välillä menee ohi, mitä opettaja sanoo. Koulun jälkeen kävin lähimmässä supermarketissa hankkimassa sinne bonuskortin ja sitten salille reenaamaan. Illalla pakersin tavalliseen tapaan kouluhommia alakerran aulassa.

[The weather today was very lovely: it was not humid at all and the temperature was only about +25 degrees. More days like this, please! The grammar lessons' content is still familiar and pretty easy for me. But there are new words coming all the time and that is why I sometimes miss what the teachers say. After the lectures I went to the closest super market to get a bonus card there and then headed to the gym. I spent the evening studying in the lobby, as usually.]

長い週末 (long weekend)

Pitkä viikonloppu meni melko pitkälti itseopiskeluun. Olimme vaihtariporukalla odottaneet sunnuntaita, koska silloin oli luvassa ilotulitustapahtuma merenrannalla. Koska sunnutaina kuitenkin satoi koko päivän, koko tapahtuma peruttiin. Joudumme siis vielä odottamaan meren näkemistä. Kaksi viikkoa on takana, mutta tärkeä paikka vielä näkemättä… Viikonloppu jatkui tänään maanantainakin, koska on kansallinen vapaapäivä vanhusten kunnioittamisen vuoksi. Ja huomennakin saattaa olla vapaata, jos taifuuni iskee ja koulupäivä peruuntuu...

Ja luonnonvoimista puheen ollen: en ole vielä maanjäristystä päässyt kokemaan, vaikka sellainen kuulemma on jo kahdesti ollut täällä näiden kahden viikon aikana. Toisen kerran oli yöllä ja toisen kerran olimme koulussa. Mitään en huomannut, mutta kuulin jälkikäteen.

Joskus tuntuu, että olisin ollut täällä jo pidempään kuin kaksi viikkoa, koska on jo tapahtunut niin paljon ja olen tavannut niin monia ihmisiä.

Kun on oikein kosteaa, näyttää siltä, että kukkuloista nousee savua.

[I spent the long weekend mostly for studying. We (the exchange students) had been waiting for Sunday since there was about to be a firework party on the beach. But because it rained pretty much the whole day yesterday, the happening was cancelled. So we still have to wait to see the sea. Two weeks here are behind but one important thing still to be seen… The weekend continued also today because it is a national holiday for respecting old people. And tomorrow might be free as well if a typhoon is striking and the school day is cancelled...

And speaking about power of nature: I still have not experienced an earthquake even though there has been at least two of those during these two weeks. One time at night and once when we were at school. I did not realize anything but I heard of them afterwards.

Sometimes it feels like I had been here for a longer time already than two weeks since so much has happened already and I have met so many people.]

勉強します (studying)

昨日は大学で授業がありました。先生は優しい人達ですよ。たくさんが分かりましたが、今週は復習する。来週からもう難しくになります。昨日の授業の後でジムに行きました。学期は始めましたから、にぎやかでした。

Opinnot yliopistolla alkoivat eilen. Meillä oli lukemisen ja kieliopin tunnit, joilla pysyin aika hyvin perässä koko ajan, vaikka opettajat pitivät ne japaniksi. Ehkä sittenkin osaan paikallista kieltä jonkin verran! Joskin tämä viikko onkin lähinnä perusasioiden kertausta ja ensi viikosta eteenpäin meille enemmän uutta asiaa.. Kummankin tunnin opettajat kuitenkin vaikuttavat mukavilta ja ymmärtäväisiltä. Iltapäivällä kävimme pienellä porukalla testaamassa yliopiston kuntosalin, joka oli suhteellisen täynnä japanilaisia opiskelijoita lukukauden alettua.

[Our studies started yesterday. We had lessons of reading and grammar and I was able to follow them pretty well even though they were kept in Japanese. Maybe I can speak a little bit of the language after all! Though during this week we mostly go quickly through the basic things and from nthe next week on we get to learn more new stuff.. Anyhow, the teachers seem very nice and understanding. In the afternoon me and some others tested the gym of the university for the first time. It was okay but pretty crowded now that the semester started.]

Tänään oli melko samanlainen päivä, mutta meillä oli koulussa oppitunnit kanjeista ja kirjoittamisesta. Täytyy kyllä alkaa opiskella asuntolassakin, sillä kirittävää riittää...

お茶 (tea)

Tervetulias-ilta oli todella mukava! Alkuun kaikki uudet vaihtarit esittelivät itsensä. Yhteensä meitä oli laskujeni mukaan noin 25 ja yleisönä meillä oli jo keväällä tulleita aasialaisia vaihtareita sekä asuntolan japanilaisia opiskelijoita. Virallinen yhteinen osuus meni sen jälkeen syömiseen ja vapaaseen keskusteluun. Tämän jälkeen kukin paineli omille teilleen ja minä jäin juttelemaan ja pelaamaan mukanani tuomaani korttipeliä muutamien opiskelijoiden kanssa. Myöhemmin illalla oli vielä "jatkobileet" asuntolan pohjakerroksen keittiössä. Illan aikana kuulin niin monia uusia nimiä (enimmäkseen kiinalaisia, korealaisia ja japanilaisia) etten varmasti muista niistä enää puoliakaan. Eurooppalaiset ja vietnamilaiset olivatkin minulle jo ennestään tuttuja.

[The welcome party was very nice! In the beginning all the new exchange students (there are about 25 of us) had to introduce themselves to the Japanese students and the exchange students who have been here from last spring. Otherwise the official part was only to eat food and talk freely with others. Afterwards I stayed in the lobby talking and playing card game with some of the students. Later in the evening we had an "after party" in the kitchen of the basement floor. I heard so many new names (mostly from China, Korea and Japan) that I don't think I can remember even half of those. All the European and Vietnamese students were familiar to me already before.]

Tänä aamuna heräsin huoneessanikin kaikuvaan kuulutukseen, kun yhtä japaninkielistä lausetta toistettiin ainakin 10 kertaa. Sisältö meni minulta ohi ja hetken mietin unenpöpperössä, pitäisikö käydä varoksi aulassa tarkistamassa tilanne. Koska käytäviltä ei kuulunut mitään, päätin pysyä huoneessa, vaikka en enää onnistunutkaan nukahtamaan. Myöhemmin sain tietää, että se oli ilmeisesti jokin testaus. Iltapäivällä kävimme teeseremonia-opettajamme kanssa teeseremonia-kulhojen näyttelyssä Tenjinissä. Mielenkiintoisinta siellä oli ehkä maistaa tuoretta vihreää teetä. Se oli suomalaisiin teepusseihin tottuneelle todella sakeaa ja vahvaa ja väriltäänkin erikoista. Tee oli melkein kirkkaan vihreää ja sen pinnalla oli vaahtoa teejauheen sekoittamisesta.

[This morning I woke up for some announcement that I heard also in my room. The same sentence was repeated at least 10 times in Japanese but I could understand it. For a while I thought if I should go downstairs to check but then decided to stay in my room even though I could not fall asleep anymore. Later I got to know it had been just some sound check. In the afternoon our tea ceremony teacher took us to an exhibition of tea ceremony bowls. The most interesting thing there was to have a cup of fresh green tea. I am used to the Finnish green tea bags so this was very thick and strong for me. Also the color was quite bright green and the tea had foam on the of it for mixing the tea powder there.]

ダンス、日本の電話番号、森 (dancing, Japanese phone number, forest)

Lauantai-iltana päätin lähteä kokeilemaan tanssimista. Päädyin lähtemään yksin ja olikin jännittävää ensimmäistä kertaa yksin lähteä metrolla ja kävellä oudoilla kaduilla kaukana asuntolasta. Onneksi nykyaika on helppoa ja olin ottanut Google Mapsin kartoista kuvat kännykälläni, joten perille löytäminen ei ollut vaikeaa. Tarvitsi vain kysyä ohikulkijalta, kumpaan suuntaan pitäisi asemalta lähteä. Tanssipaikalla ei todellakaan ollut ruuhkaa (päinvastoin!), mutta pääsin lopulta tanssimaan ja juttelin todella mukavan paikan omistajan (?) kanssa englanniksi ja muutamien japanilaisten kanssa pääsin kokeilemaan japania. Sain kyllä yhtenään olla hokemassa "sumimasen, wakarimasen", mutta oli antoisa ilta.

[On Saturday evening I decided to go to try dancing here. I ended up going alone and it was pretty exciting to go for the first time alone on the streets far from my place here. Luckily it is so easy to check everything on the internet nowadays and I only had to ask which direction is the right one when I got off the station. The bar was not crowded at all (it was the opposite!) but I finally got to dance too. I was chatting with the very mice owner (?) and with some Japanese too. It was good practice for me even though I had to say "sumimasen, wakarimasen" all the time.]

Eilen kävimme pienellä porukalla hankkimassa japanilaiset sim-kortit kännyköihin, enimmäkseen netin takia. Taas voi sanoa olevansa todella kiitollinen siitä, ettei tarvitse yksin täällä kulkea. Vieressä istuva tulkkaava tuutori oli suuri apu! Tästä eteenpäin minut tavoittaa paremmin japanilaisesta numerosta, mutta suomalainenkin on yhä käytössä.

[We went to buy Japanese sim cards yesterday, mostly because we want to be able to connect to the internet everywhere. Once again I was happy I don't have to go around by myself. I was so grateful that there was a Japanese tutor who sat next to me and explained everything!]

Tänään on satanut aamusta asti ja sade vain yltyy päivän edetessä. Siitä huolimatta kävin kävelyllä yhden vaihtarin kanssa. Olimme päättäneet käydä tutustumassa hieman lähempää asuntolamme takana kohoaviin kukkuloihin. Löysimme metsään vievän reitin ja se olikin seikkailu! Hieno elämys kävellä sateisessa metsässä inhottavista hämähäkeistä, niiden seiteistä ja kuraisesta polusta huolimatta. Hienoin yksittäinen kohde oli pieni vesiputous, joka mielenkiintoisten maisemien lisäksi palkitsi vaelluksemme. Tiheän kasvuston takia emme nähneet kuitenkaan alas kaupunkiin, emmekä päässet huipulle. Kotimatkalla olimme niin märkiä, ettemme enää välittäneet sateesta, vaan päätimme ottaa ilon irti vesilätäköistä kunnolla! Asuntolalle päästyä otin ensimmäistä kertaa täällä lämpimän suihkun viileän sijasta.

[It has been raining all the time since the morning and it is just getting heavier all the time. Nevertheless, I went for a walk with one of the exchange students. We had decided to go and see the hills that rise behind the International House. We found a road leading to the forest and we had an adventure! It was great to walk in the rainy forest even though there were some horrible spiders with their nets and the road was not the best. The most wonderful thing we saw was a little waterfall. Because of all the trees and other plants we could not see the city from the heights and we could not reach the top of the hill. On the way home we were so wet that we did not care about the rain anymore but instead we enjoyed the puddles on the roads! Afterwards I had a warm shower instead of a cool one for the first time here.]

Tänä maanantaina on illalla tiedossa vaihtareiden tervetulias-juhlat täällä International Housen tiloissa. Ei käy kateeksi niitä, jotka joutuvat tulemaan muualta tuon kaatosateen läpi.

安いラーメン (cheap ramen)

Eilen päivän päätteeksi menin yhdessä muutamien vaihtareiden kanssa nauttimaan ramenia. Myöhäisen lounaan ja kuuman sään takia ei ollut kovin nälkä, joten tyydyin pienimpään annokseen. Annos oli kuitenkin paitsi hyvä myös täyttävä. Ja se maksoi vain 290 jeniä eli noin 2,5 euroa! Koska kaiken lisäksi kyseinen ruokapaikka sijaitsee hyvin lähellä asuntolaamme, niin olimme yksimielisiä siitä, että sinne tullaan varmasti menemään monta kertaa jatkossakin päivälliselle. Ramenin jälkeen poikkesimme vielä tien toisella puolella olevaan kirjakauppaan, joka on auki ympäri vuorokauden. Alakerta oli täynnä lehtiä, mangaa, musiikkia ja muuta värikästä ihasteltavaa ja toisessa kerroksessa pääsimme kokeilemaan pelikoneita.

[Yesterday I joined some of the exchange students for ramen. I was not that hungry because of the warm weather so I decided to try the smallest dish. Nevertheless, it was big enough and also tasty. And it cost only 290 yens which is about 2,5 euros! The place is also located very close to our house which means we will go there many times again, for sure. After the dinner we checked a bookstore on the other side of the road. It is open 24/7 and it is full of nice stuff. The first floor is for magazines, manga, music and such while in the second floor we got to test some gaming machines. Pretty cool place!]

Vain 290 jeniä!

Tänään oli ensimmäinen vapaapäivä ilman suunniteltua ohjelmaa. Itse kävin kampuksella kävelemässä ja ihastelemassa ja istahdin yhden lammen äärelle opettelemaan kanjeja. Niitä totisesti olisi täällä hyvä osata! Asuntolalle palatessa törmäsin toiseen englantilaisista vaihtareista ja lähdin seuraksi käymään supermarketissa. Vuorokauden ympäri olevat kombinit ovat todella pieniä, joten oli mukava ostaa hedelmiä, voita, leipää ja halpaa vettä, vaikka ostosreissu veikin tunnin verran. Vesi-/juomapulloja kun pitää olla yhtenään hankkimassa.

[Today was the first free day without any specific program. I ended up to walk around the campus and sat down next to a small pond to practice some kanjis. It really would be good to know those when living here! Afterwards I met other one of the English students by coincidence and we went to check a supermarket. It took one hour to go there and back but it was nice to buy some fruits, bread, butter and cheap water. One needs to buy water water or drinks quite often here and the bottles in little kombinis are more expensive.]

今日おにぎりを食べてみました。人気がありますが、私は大好きじゃない。

Tulin viimein kokeilleeksi myös onigiria. Ne ovat todella kuuluisia ja suosittuja, mutta pitää sanoa, etteivät ole ihan minun suosikkejani..

ちかだ、漢字、カラオケ (chikada, kanji, karaoke)

I never thought some creatures could stay awake 24/7 but it seems like chikadas can. It does not matter if it is day or night, there is a noise around the International House all the time. Despite the warmth, I even have to close my balcony door a bit for the nights so that the sound of the chikadas would not bother me while trying to fall asleep.

昨日カラオケを歌いに行きました。Yesterday evening we went to sing karaoke to Tenjin. We had some problems finding each others because our group (the European exchange students) had devided during the day. It is a bit hard to reach each others for now since most of us have internet only at the stations or some other places with free wi-fi. I don't even have wi-fi in my room. I still have to go downstairs to the lobby of the International House to get my phone connected to the internet. But getting back to karaoke... In Japan they have separate rooms for groups of friends where nobody else can hear them and you can call for free drinks (non-alcoholic, at least in the place we went to) anytime you want with the phone in the room. So it was so much fun to hang out with our group and sing songs in English, French and Japanese. I was so surprised when I could find a song coming from Finland (The Rasmus) and many songs of some of my favorite Japanese bands! When we left from karaoke there was such a heavy rain. We walked under the just bought umbrellas two people under each one. It felt so good when we finally got back to the International House.

Today's program was only go to a bank to have bank accounts us. We need those at least to pay the rent here. We had to fill again papers by copying the right kanjis from the example papers at "Kokusai sentaa". But we got to practice kanjis a bit more at the bank. We needed to be so exact with all parts of the papers that some of us had to copy the kanjis and other things 3 or 4 times again. For example you had to have your name written in capital letters and your family name first. If it was not like that, you basically had to fill the whole form again. We did not know whether to laugh or cry... The bank even got closed during the time we spent there copying and waiting.

I still have not described how the International House is like so here is some information about the place I stay at. When you enter to the lobby, you have to take your outdoor shoes off and change to the indoor flippers. (This is very normal in Japan.) You put your shoes/flippers to a tiny shoe box when you change to the others. The box is so small that you can fit there one or two pairs of shoes at a time and the rest of the shoes you just need to keep in your own room. The room itself is a size of 3x6 meters (approximately) and it has bathroom, toilet, fridge/freezer, bed, desk, chair and some shelves. In addition to this, there is a balcony attached to each room. Very nice, I would say. There is also an air conditioner but since one pays for the used electricity, I try to avoid turning it on. Better get used to the warm weather.

福岡大学 (Fukuoka University)

Yesterday morning all the European exchange students living in the International House of Fukuoka University were lead to "Kokusai sentaa" which is a place for exchange or foreign students at the university. There we had orientation to our studies. We got so many papers and we also had to fill some for the health insurance and such. We basically got an example paper which showed us what and how to fill. It really was so strange to copy the kanjis to my paper. Huh, what a job! But at least I learned the kanjis for Fukuoka. (Maybe should have learned them already before..)

After the paper work two tutors came to show us a bit around the university. Oh man, they have a movie room where you can take a DVD or blue ray from the shelf and watch it with a tv screen and good head phones! The restaurants are very nice too since they actually have many portion options and you can see the shape, the price and sometimes even the calories of the dishes. The food is so good! And they have background music in the restaurants too.

After going around in the campus our tutors took us to get the right address to our residence cards and to get the health insurance. They actually took care of all the work and we were just waiting. After that they took us to Tenjin to buy all kind of things we need here: pillows, bed sheets, internet cables etc. We are so lucky since everything is made so easy for exchange students here!

After all the waiting, shopping, waiting and walking we went to a yakitori restaurant. We had a menu that includes several different plates and as many drinks as you want. I actually ate raw salmon, seashells (that I had discovered to be tasty already before) and some pieces of octopus. And I found out that two people in our group don't like tomato either. I am not alone!!

All together our European group is formed by 10 students: 2 from Finland, 2 from Belgium, 2 from England, 1 from Germany and 3 from France. 7 of us live in the International House that is located in 5-10 minutes walking distance from the campus.

Today morning we had language test to place us to the right groups for the Japanese lessons that will start next week. We had grammar, vocabulary and kanji tests plus listening comprehension. Wow, totemo muzukashikatta! I really realized that there is so much to learn but at least I was able to fill some parts of the tests. After all the tests we had a lunch on the 16th floor of one of the campus buildings. Nice view over the campus!

The weather has been pretty warm here. It has been mostly cloudy and the temperature is under +30°C but the air is so moist that we are sweating. I would still say this is still okay. At least when the sun stays behind the clouds.

Matka fantastiseen Fukuokaan

Lento Helsingistä Tokioon sujui hyvin toisen suomalaisen vaihto-opiskelijan kanssa. Mitä nyt yöunet jäivät koneessa olemattomiksi.. Kun avasin laskeutuvan lentokoneen ikkunan ja katselin pilvimassoja ja horisontissa siintävää Fuji-vuorta, kaikki jännitys ja haikeus oli poissa. Ihailin fantastista maisemaa ja olin intoa täynnä tulevia seikkailuita varten.

Tänään aamulla saimme Naritan lentokentällä Residence Cardit, jotka ovat henkilöllisyystodistuksemme tulevan vuoden ajan. Lentokentän henkilökunta puhui ihan mukavasti englantia ja oli erittäin avuliasta auttamaan hetimmiten pienissäkin asioissa. Meidät talutettiin melkein kädestä pitäen aina oikeaan paikkaan. Kaikki sujui Naritassa nopeasti ja pääsimme aamupäivän aikana siirtymään laukkuinemme Hanedan lentokentälle, joka sijaitsee noin tunnin bussimatkan päässä Naritasta. Siellä sitten iltapäivällä nousimme Fukuokaan vievään koneeseen.

Fukuokan lentokentällä kaikki oli yhtä helposti organisoitu kuin Naritassakin ja henkilökunta tuli varmistamaan japaniksi taksikuskilta, että pieneen taksiin mahtuu varmasti meidän kummankin tavarat. Itse taksikuski ei sitten enää puhunut sanaakaan englantia. Siihen mennessä olimme vain pari kertaa joutuneet selviämään japanilla, mutta taksissa oli kaikilla sormi suussa. Kuskilla tuntui olevan vaikeuksia löytää navigaattorista asuntolamme osoitetta (vaikka Fukuokan yliopisto olikin ystävällisesti postittanut meille lapun, jonka voimme ojentaa taksikuskille avuksi). Ensimmäinen määränpää osoittautui täysin virheelliseksi paikaksi, eikä kielimuuri auttanut asiaa. Kuitenkin kuski lopulta keksi, miten syöttää oikea osoite navigaattoriin ja pääsimme perille asuntolaan.

Asuntolassa meitä oli vastassa liuta asuntolan japanilaisia vastuuoppilaita, jotka kantoivat painavat laukkumme ja opastivat asuntolan paikkoja ja tapoja. Yksi heistä jopa lähti oppaaksemme kauppareissulle, kun vain kävimme kysymässä, onko sadan jenin kauppa (todella kätevä ja halpa sekatavarakauppa) kävelymatkan päässä. Kohtelias kulttuuri hohkaa joka puolella, vaikka kieli tuottaakin puolin ja toisin haasteita kommunikaatiossa. Onneksi tuutorimme täällä osaavat jonkin verran englantia (ainakin paremmin kuin me japania). On tullut huomattua tässä vuorokauden aikana, että oma japaninkielen taitoni on loppujen lopuksi varsin vähäistä. Mutta mitäpä siitä, sillä sitähän tänne tultiin oppimaan! Vuoden päästä sujuu jo varmasti paremmin!

Puolen tunnin taksimatka ei vielä avannut suurta 1,5 miljoonan asukkaan kaupunkia kovin paljoa, mutta pidän siitä jo nyt. Yhdessä suunnassa kaupunkia rajaa meri ja melko lailla kaikilla muilla sivuilla sitä ympäröivät vehreät vuoret. Oikeastaan heti parvekkeeni takaa kohoaa yksi rinteistä.
