クリスマスと冬休みの始め (Christmas and the start of the winter vacation)

ついに休みになりました! 休みにも勉強しなければなりませんが、学校に行きません。クリスマスは楽しかったですけど、家族と一緒にいることができませんでした…

Joulu täällä Fukuokassa meni hyvin. Aattona kävimme kaveriporukalla syömässä ja juhlimassa. Izakayassa saimme tabehoudain mukaisesti tilata listalta koko ajan lisää kaikkia ruokia, mitä halusimme, ja koska meitä oli yhteensä 11, niin tarjoilijat saivat yhtenään juosta pöydällemme tilauksia hakemaan ja tuomaan. Maistoin ensimmäistä kertaa mm. motsunabea ja yakisobaa. Ensimmäinen ei vakuuttanut, mutta jälkimmäinen oli herkullista. Joulupäivänä pääsin ensimmäistä kertaa täällä talvi-tunnelmiin, kun menin muutaman kaverin kanssa luistelemaan. Se oli hienoa, kuin olisi koto-Suomessa ollut! Kaiken kaikkiaan joulu oli oikein kiva, mutta ei vain paljoa jouluta tuntunut...

[Christmas here is Fukuoka was nice. On Christmas Eve we went to eat and celebrate with a group of friends. In izakaya we got to order any dishes from the list all the time, as is the point of tabehoudai. Because we were 11 people, the waitresses were running to our table all the time to get and deliver the orders. I tasted for the first time motsunabe and yakisoba. The first one was not to my taste but the later one was delicious. On Christmas day I got the winter feeling for the first time in Japan when we went ice skating with a few friends. It was great, like being back in Finland! All in all the Christmas was very nice but it just didn't really feel like Christmas...

Tänään toisena joulupäivänä meillä oli ihan tavallinen koulupäivä, vaikka japanilaisen kirjallisuuden kurssilta puuttui puolet vaihtareista ja japanilaisista opiskelijoista. Ei sinänsä yllättänyt, koska viikonloppuna oli joulu ja huomisesta alkaen on reilun viikon mittainen talviloma. Jes, loma! (Vaikka lomallakin pitää koulutöitä tehdä ja kerrata syksyn opintoja, sillä tammikuussa on edessä myös lukukauden päätöskokeet.) Mutta tänä iltana koutöit saivat jäädä sivuun ja katselin pitkästä aikaa japanilaista draama-sarjaa ja söin ensimmäistä kertaa melon panin.

Today, on the second Christmas day, we had a normal school day even though half of the exchange students and the Japanese students were missing from our Japanese literature class. But to be honest, that was not surprising considering that Christmas was on the last weekend and from tomorrow on we will have a winter vacation that lasts over a week. Yay, vacation! (Even though I need to do school work and review all the stuff we have studied during the autumn since we will also have the end-of-the-term exams in January.) But tonight I decided not to study but instead watching Japanese drama after a long time and eating melon pan for the first time.

What has surprised me in Japan

Moni asia täällä Japanissa on niinkuin olin etukäteen kuvitellutkin, mutta moni asia on myös yllättänyt ja hämmästyttänyt. Mainittakoon ensin ruoat. Riisin ja nuudeleiden määrä ei ole yllättänyt, mutta kalaruokien vähäisyys on. Luulin, että slisin täällä paljon kalaa ja että ruoka olisi vieläkin terveellisempää kuin Suomessa. Nyt en olekaan varma, sillä yleisimmin syömäni ruoka tuntuu olevan friteerattu kana. Erilaisia muita mereneläviä (erityisesti mustekalaa ja kalmaria) on kyllä jonkin verran, mutta ne eivät istu omiin ruokatottumuksiini.

[Many things here in Japan are just as I had thought but there are still many things that have surprised me. First I will mention the food. The amount of rice and noodles have not surprised me but there are way less fish dishes than I had thought. I thought beforehand that I would eat a lot of fish and healthy food but now I am not so sure since the most commob dish I have is fried chicken. Okay, there are dome other sea food (luke octopus and calmar) but I don't really like them.]

Kalaruokien lisäksi ulkomaalaisten vähäisyys on hieman yllättänyt. En ollutkaan odottanut näkeväni kovin paljoa ulkomaalaisia ihmisiä, mutta silti meidän eurooppalaisten vaihtareiden "erilaisuus" jaksaa kiinnittää kaupungillakin paikallisten huomiota.

[Not only fish dishes but also the amount of foreign people is smaller than I expected. I didn't think I would meet lots of foreigners but still the local people pay more attention to us European exchange students than I had thought.]

Ja jos joitakin asioita on vähemmän kuin luulin, niin erikoisten tavaroiden määrä ja moninaisuus on suurempi kuin luulinkaan. Tuntuu, että kaikesta voi olls söpö versio ja lisäksi japanilaiset käyttävät erikoisia tuotteita valkaisevasta käsivoiteesta pandanaamaisiin tuoli-sukkiin.

[And if there are fewer of some things than I had thought, I can say that there are more of the extraordibary things than I had thought, as well. I think that there are always also a cute version of everything and in addition Japanese people use all kind of interesting/strange things from whitening hand cream to panda-faced chair leg socks.]

Yksi hauskoista yllätyksistä on ollut japanilaisten reaktio-tavat. Monesti animessa ja jaoanilaisissa sarjoissa hahmot tuntuvat reagoivan sekä äänen että ilmeiden puolesta epäluonnollisen voimakkaasti hämmästyessään, mutta se kaikki onkin täyttä todellisuutta!

[One of the funny surprises have been the reactiobs of the Japanese people. In anime or the Japanese dramas characters always seem to react too strongly with the voice and the facial expressions when they get surprised but it seems it is actually the reality!]

Viime aikojen kokemuksista mainittakoon myös pari asiaa. Viime pyhänä pääsin tosiaan kuuntelenaan filharmonisen orkesterin konserttia hienoon konserttisaliin. Samana päivänä kävin myös juusto-ravintolassa syömässä pizzaa, kevätrullia ja fondueta ja kiertelemässä jälleen Tenjinin joulutorilla. Lisäksi maistoin viimein kuuluisaa vihreän teen makuista jäätelöä. Monet ovat sitä minulle hehkuttaneet, jopa sellaiset ihmiset jotka eivät vihreästä teestä niin pitäisikään. Hah sanon minä, sillä jäätelö maistuu tasan japanin vihreältä teeltä, vaikka onkin makeampaa! Tältä viikolta mieleenpainunein kokemus oli Canal cityn ostoskeskukssa musiikki- ja vesi-näytös.

[Let's mention a couple of things what has happened recently. Last Sunday I got to listen to a concert of a symphony orchestra in a wonderful concert hall. On the same day I went to a cheese restaurant to eat spring rolls, pizza and fondue, and also walked again around the Christmas market in Tenjin. I also finally tasted the green tea ice cream. Many people have told me about that and said that it is delicious even if they don't really fancy green tea itself. Hah. I say that the ice cream tastes just like the tea even though it is sweeter. During this week the most memorable thing was a music and water show in Canal city.]

Joulu täällä Fukuokassa ei tunnu niinkään joululta kuin miltä tahansa festivaalilta. Onneksi suomalaiset joululaulut, joulun ilosanomaan liittyvät tekstit ja äidin Suomesta lähettämät pipari-possut saavat oikean tunnelman edes hetkeksi aikaan. Rauhallista joulua kaikille kaikkialla!

[Christmas here in Fukuoka doesn't really feel like Christmas but more like any festival. Luckily, the Finnish Christmas songs, the texts about the joyfull Christmas gift we got from God and the gingerbread pigs my mother sent to me give me the right feeling even for some time. Peaceful Christmas to everyone all around the world!]

What I expected from Japan

Viimeisen viikon aikana ei kummempia isoja juttuja ole tapahtunut. Hankin kirjakauppaan saamallani lahjakortilla japaninkielisen satukirjan, esitin englantia puhuvaa potilasta yliopiston lääketieteen opiskelijoille, tuskailen yhtä haastavammaksi muuttuvien japaninkielen opintojen kanssa ja herään joka aamu huoneeseeni saapuneeseen kylmyyteen (vaikka pyjaman lisäksi vedän illalla päälle fleece-hupparin, polvisukat ja pörrösukat).

[During the last week there has happened nothing big. I bought a story tale book with a gidt card I had got, I pretended to be an English speaking patient for the medical students of the university, I am fighting with my Japanese studies that become nore and more difficult and I am waking up every morning for the coldness in my room (even though I am wearing fleece hoodie, knee-high socks and fluffy socks in addition to my normal pj's).]

Ajattelin hieman kertoa, mitkä asiat täällä Japanissa ovat vastanneet olettamuksiani ja mikä on tullut yllätyksenä. Odotusten mukaista on kohteliaisuus ja sääntöjen noudattaminen. Ihmiset kumartelevat ja puhuvat yleensä ottaen erittäin kohteliaasti. Sääntöjen noudattaminen näkyy mm. roskattomuutena sekä (hieman yllätykseksenikin) metroasemilla, kun ihmiset oikeasti jonottavat siististi kahdessa jonossa per metron ovi, kuten lattian ohjenuolet kehoittavat.

[I thought of telling a little bit what here in Japan is the way I expected it to bw and what has been surprising. Firstly, the politeness and following rules is as good as I thought. People are bowing and mostly talk very politely to each others. Following the rules you can notice for example by seeing no garbage on the streets and (as a little surprise for me) on the subway stations where people are queuing in two straight lines per each door of the subway, just as the arrows tell you on the floor.]

Japanilaisten pukeutumistapa on myös odotusteni mukaista. Paljasta pintaa ei näytetä liikaa vahingossakaan, ainakaan yläkropan puolesta. Helteilläkin kaikki käyttivät pienikaula-aukkoista t-paitaa. Alakroppa ei niin hyvin peitetty välttämättä ole, paikalliset kun suosivat minihameita. Lisäksi naisten vaatetus-trendi on pitkälti söpöyteen pyrkivä. Eikä se harvinaista ole nähdä esimerkiksi pientä pehmolelua roikkumassa miespuolisten opiskelijoidenkaan laukuista.

[Alsp the way Japanese people dress up is somewhat what I expected. One does not show too much skin, at least what it comes to the upper body. Even on the hot weather everyone ia wearing a t-shirt that is not too open. The lower body is not that important to cover since the local people adore mini skirts. In addition, the trend female clothing is many times just to try to look very cute. Nor is it rare to see a small toy hanging from a bag of a male student either.]

Söpöjen vaatteiden lisäksi söpöys muutenkin on suosittua. "Kawaii" on yksi ehdottomia hitti-sanoja osata japaniksi ja sitä viljellään täällä kyllä melko paljon. Toinen puhumiseen liittyvä ennakko-oletukset täyttävä asia on englanninkielin taso. Ei kannata olettaa, että sitä osataan täällä. Vaikka japanilaiset sitä vähän osaisivatkin, niin he ovat todella ujoja käyttämään sitä. Poikkeuksia toki löytyy, mutta lähtökohtaisesti varaudun melkein kaikkialla asioimaan aina japaniksi.

[In addition to the cute clothes, cuteness is also popular otherwise. "Kawaii" is absolutely one of the words one should know in Japanese since you can hear it a lot. Another expected thing concidering talking is the level of English. One should not assume that they speak it here. And even if they speak it a bit, they might be very shy to use it. Of course there are exceptions but normally I am prepared to speak Japanese almost everywhere.]

Palattakoon yllättäviin asioihin seuraavalla kerralla. Nyt pitäisi lukea maanantaina olevaan kieliopin testiin, sillä huomenna on tiedossa Kyushun yliopiston filharmonisen orkesterin konsertti.

[Let me get back to the surprising aspects on the next blog text. Now I should read for the grammar test on Monday because tomorrow I will go to a concert of the philharmonic orchestra of Kyushu university.]

The end of the year and end of the semester getting closer

Viime tiistaina meillä oli tämän lukukauden viimeinen teeseremonian tunti. Opettajamme oli pyytänyt paikalle neljä japanilaista opiskelijaa, joille me valmistimme teetä parhaamme mukaan kaikkien tunneilla opittujen yksityskohtien mukaisesti. Oli hauskaa, kun me vaihtarit olimme se tietäväisempi ja opettava osapuoli, vaikka kyseessä oli japanilaisen kulttuurin yksi tärkeä elementti.

[Last Tuesday we had the last lesson of tea ceremony during this semester. Our teacher had asked four Japanese students to come and we made tea for them trying to follow allthe details we had learned on the lessons. It was fun when we exchange students were the ones knowing more and teaching them even though it was something special in the Japanese culture.]

Tiistai-iltana kaikille yliopiston vaihto-opiskelijoille järjestettiin vuoden lopettajais-juhlat, jotka käsittivät lähinnä syömistä. Ruoka oli hyvää ja sitä oli paljon! Söin pitkästä aikaa myös useita erilaisia hedelmiä. Puheista en ymmärtänyt puoliakaan.

[On Tuesday evening the university organized the end of the year party for all of its exchange students. Basically it was only talking and eating but I didn't mind since there was a lot of food and it was delicious! After a longer time I also ate many different kind of fruits. The speeches were too difficult for me to understand.]

Perjataina oli viimeinen TA tämän lukukauden osalta. Minulla oli kaikkiaan kolme pienryhmää tämän syksyn aikana, joita koitin auttaa ja rohkaista puhumaan englantia. Omien ryhmieni englanninkielen taso oli laskevaa trendiä niin, että viimeisessä ryhmässä sain kannustaa osaa sanomaan edes jotakin englanniksi.

[On Friday we had the last TA of this semester. I had all in all three small groups that I tried to help and encourage to speak English. The English level between my groups seemed to get lower and lower so that in my last group there were some that I tried to encourage to say at least something in English.]

Eilen lauantaina istuin ensimmäistä kertaa elämässäni elävänä mallina huoneessa kaikkien muiden edessä. Minua oltiin kysytty pari viikkoa sitten japanilaisten piirustusryhmän malliksi ja ajattelin, että mikä ettei. Samassa asennossa istuminen 20 minuuttia kerrallaan oli hieman haastavampaa kuin aluksi luulin ja kaikkein rankinta oli katsoa samaan kohtaan seinällä koko ajan. Kokemus kuitenkin oli mielenkiintoinen ja pääsin juttelemaan japaniksi ja ihastelemaan taidokkaita piirustuksia ja maalauksia.

[On Saturday I was sitting as a live model in front of a group of people. They had asked me a couple of weeks ago and I thought why not. Sitting in the same position 20 min at a time was tougher than I had thought and the hardest part was to look at the same spot for the whole time. Nevertheless, the experience was interesting and I got to speak Japanese and see amazing pictures and paitings.

ホームステイの週末 (home stay weekend)

今週末は日本に来てから一番面白かったです。とても優しくて気さくな家族と土曜日の朝から日曜日の夜まで遊びました。週末に初めて日本料理を作ったり、太宰府に行ったり、納豆と明太子を食べてみたりしました。それから、たくさん日本語を使って、ほとんど英語で話しませんでした。とても楽しかったです!

Tämä viikonloppu oli mielenkiintoisin viikonloppu, jonka olen Japanissa viettänyt. Yliopiston kautta tarjoutui mahdollisuus home stay -viikonloppuun japanilaisen perheen kotona. Lauantaina aamupäivällä saavuin ensimmäistä kertaa täällä aitoon japanilais-tyyppiseen kotiin ja ilahduin paitsi talosta ja lemmikeistä (koira ja kaksi kissaa) myös isäntäperheestäni. Minua oli etukäteen hieman jännittänyt kohdata japanilaisen opiskelijan (jonka kerran tapasin koululla) vanhempia, mutta kotona meidät vastaanottava äiti oli ensi hetkestä todella rento, mukava, hössöttävä ja vieraanvarainen. Se niistä kohteliaisuus-tapojen osaamisen pelosta!

[This weekend was the most interesting weekend I have had in Japan. Our university offered a chance to go for a home stay for a weekend into a Japanese family. On Saturday morning I arrived for the first time into a real Japanese style home and I didn't get happy only for that or the pets (a dog and two cats) but also for my host family. I was a bit nervous beforehand to meet the parents of the Japanese student (whom I had met once before) but the mom who welcomed us home was very relaxed, nice and hospitaple. So no more need to be scared if I know all the polite manners!]

Launataista suurin osa ajasta meni Dazaifussa käymiseen. Dazaifussa on Fukuokan kuuluisin temppeli, jonne tullaan kuulemma Kyotosta saakka ja lisäksi alue on kaunis ja siellä on paljon mielenkiintoisia kauppoja kaikenlaisesta samurai-tavarasta Ghiblin elokuvien fanituote-myymälään. Saavuttuamme host-perheeni vuokrasi minulle ja tyttärelleen kimonot, joissa kuljimme puolet päivästä. Se oli ensimmäinen kerta elämässäni, kun sain sellaisen päälleni ja voin sanoa, että en osaisi pukea sitä itse nähtyäni kerran, miten se toimii. Illalla kävimme yhdessä yakitori-ravintolassa, mistä en voinut kuin iloita. Kotimatkalla poikkesimme vielä Tenjinin joulutorilla.

[Most of the day we spent on visiting Dazaifu. There is the most famous temple of Fukuoka that gets visitors all the way from Kyoto. In addition thw whole area is beautiful and there are many stores selling stuff from samurai decoration to Ghibli movies fan stuff. When we arrived to the area, my host family rented kimonos for me and their daughter that we had on for half of the day. That was my first time ever wearing a kimono and I can say that I could not tie it correctly myself after seeing i
once how it works. In the evening we went to a yakitori restaurant that I could only be happy about. On the way home we also visited the Christmas market of Tenjin.]

Toisena päivänä pääsin kokkaamaan perinteisiä japanilaisia ruokia (miso-keittoa ja nikujakaa) ja maistamaan lisäksi nattoa ja mentaikoa ensimmäistä kertaa. Mitä runsaimman aamiaisen jälkeen pienestä sateesta huolimatta kävin perheen tyttären kanssa läheisessä puistossa, jossa oli sekä eläintarha että kasvitieteellinen puutarha. Hieno paikka, josta näki pitkälle Fukuokan kaupunkia! Iltapäivän lämmittelimme kotatsun alla ja valmistimme ja söimme riisileivonnaisia. Home stay -viikonloppuni lopuksi kävimme vielä ulkona syömässä tempuraa ja sobaa. En edes osaa enää laskea, montaako ruokalajia maistoin ensimmäistä kertaa elämässäni yhden viikonlopun aikana. Lisäksi kommunikoin vähintään 95% koko ajasta japaniksi, mistä olen sekä yllättynyt että iloinen.

[On the second day I got to cook typical Japanese food (miso soup and nikujaka) together with them and I also tasted natto and mentaiko for the first time in my life. After the biggest breakfast ever we went to a park nearby to see rhe zoo and the botanical garden there. Nice place with nice view over Fukuoka! In the afternoon we were warming up under a kotatsu and enjoyed some rice cakes we made. At the end of my home stay we went to a restaurant to have tempura and soba. I cannot even count how many new dishes I tasted during one weekend. In addition to all, I was communicating in Japanese at least 95% of all the time which both surprised me and made me happy.

Culture in many forms

Viime lauantaina liityin kaverini mukaan vapaahtoisten järjestämään hetkeen, jonne voi mennä harjoittelemaan japania. Sattumalta oli kuukauden erikoispäivä ja askartelimme uuden vuoden kortteja. Ensimmäistä kertaa koulun ulkopuolella jouduin myös esittelemään itseni japaniksi ihmisjoukon edessä.

[Last Saturday I joined my friend to a Japanese calss organized by volunteers. It happened to be the special day of the month and we made some New Year's cards. For the first time outside school I had to introduce myself in Japanese in front of a bigger group of people.]

Sunnuntaina oli minulle kulttuuri-päivä, sillä ensiksi menin seuraamaan astetta hienompaa teeseremoniaa ja sen jälkeen söin Hakata ramenia ja pääsin klassisen musiikin konserttiin. Teeseremonia oli mielenkiintoinen kokemus, sillä ensimmäistä kertaa pääsimme temppelin sisään ja seremoniaan liittyi paljon muutakin kuin tunneilla oppimamme. Opintomatka osoittautui myös suhteellisen rankaksi, sillä istuin tunnin putkeen seiza-asennossa (polvi-istunnassa), aivan vieressäni oli tunnin mittaan turhankin paljon lämmittävä tuli, ihmisiä oli niin paljon että en nähnyt puoliakaan ja kaikki japaninkielinen selostus meni täysin ohi. Lisäksi saimme lähteä reissuun aamukahdeksalta sateen läpi.

[Sunday was a culture day for me because first I went to see a fancier tea ceremony and after that I tried Hakata ramen and got to go to a classical music concert. The tea ceremony was an interesting experience because we were able to enter a temple for the first time and because there were so many things we don't have on the lessons. But the field trip ended up to be quite tough too since I was sitting one hour in seiza (on my knees), the heater right next to me was too warm, there were so many people that I could hardly see half of what was happening and we couldn't understand anything they explained in Japanese. In addition, we left to the field trip at 8 am through a rain.]

Konsertti oli sitten pelkästään hieno kokemus! Kaverini tunsi orkesterin pasuunan soittajan ja hän tarjosi minulle yhden vapaalipuistaan. Musiikki oli hieman erilaista kuin olen klassisen musiikin konsertissa ennen kuullut, mutta se oli todella viihdyttävää.

[But the concert was only a great experience! My friend knew the bassoon and she offered me one of her free tickets. The music was a bit different from what I have heard in classical concerts before but it was really entertaining.]

Yleensä asuntolan aulassa istuessani keskityn läksyjen tekemiseen. Nyt on parina päivänä tullut hetki katseltua myös televisiota. On hauska seurata uutisia Trumpista tai Madagaskarin pingviinejä japaninkielellä.

[Normally when I sit in the lobby of the dorm, I do my homework. But now I have been watching also tv for a couple of times. It is fun to follow the news about Trump or watch The penguins of Madagascar in Japanese.]

Ja pitää nyt mainita yksi mukavista yllätyksistä, joihin ruokakaupassa törmään välillä. Suomessa tuotteisiin isketään extra-alennus vasta, kun parasta ennen -päiväys on samana päivänä. Täällä löytää -20% tuotteita joskus lähes viikkoa ennen päiväystä. Ostin tänään ale-maitoa, joka menee vanhaksi vasta neljän päivän kuluttua.

[And I have to mention one of the nice surprises I see at the market sometimes. In Finland they give some discount for the products only when the best before date is on the same day. Here one can find products with -20% sticker almost one week before the date. I got some cheaper milk today even though it is getting old only after four days.]

お寿司 (sushi)

Tällä viikolla tuli käytyä yhdessä Japanin must-paikoista: sushi-baarissa. Sushi-baarissa liukuhihna pyörittää sushi-lautasia asiakkaiden ohitse ja asiakkaat voivat napata houkuttelevalta näyttävän lautasen tai tilata jonkin tietyn sushin listalta. Meidän sushi-ravintolamme oli kohtuullisen suosittu, sillä vaikka olimme tehneet varauksen, niin saimme odotella tovin ennen vapaata pöytää. Ruokalistalla oli sushien lisäksi liuta herkullisen näköisiä jälkiruokia ja kaikki oli halpaa! Kuusi sushi-lautasta ja kaksi jälkiruokaa maksoivat yhteensä noin 8 euroa.

[This week I visited one of the must places in Japan: a sushi bar. In a sushi bar there is a conveyor belt that takes sushi plates close to the customers who can pick a plate that looks tempting for them. It is also possible to order a specific sushi form the menu. The suji restaurant we went to was quite popular because even though we had made a reservation, we had to wait for a while for a free table. In addition to the sushis there were delicious looking deserts in the menu and everything was cheap! Six plates of sushi and two deserts cost around 8 euros.]

Tännekin on tullut "talvi". Lämpötila on viime päivinä noussut enää kymmenen asteen tienoille ja osa ihmisistä kulkee talvitakki päällä. Täytyy myöntää, että itselläkin on välillä vähän kylmä, ertyisesti tuulisina päivinä, mutta paksuimpiin talvitamineisiin en ole siirtynyt. "Talvesta" huolimatta puissa on vielä puolet lehdistä ja kukat kukkivat englantilaisessa puutarhassa, jonka löysin kampukselta. Tokiossa on tullut kunnon talvi etuajassa, sillä siellä on satanut lunta marraskuun aikana viimeksi yli 50 vuotta sitten. Toivo elää, että lunta tulisi tänne eteläänkin!

[The "winter" has arrived here too. The temperature has been rising only to ten degrees recently and some of the people are wearing their winter jackets. I have to admit that sometimes I feel a bit cold too, at least when it is windy but I still haven't changed to my warmest winter clothes. Nevertheless the "winter", the trees are still having half of their leaves and flowers are blooming in the English garden I found from the campus. Tokyo got a real winter very early because the previous time it got snow in November was over 50 years ago. I can still live in hope that it will snow here in the south too!]

Sightseeing in Fukuoka

Sunnuntaina tuli pitkästä aikaa kierreltyä Fukuokassa. Tuli käytyä eri metrolinjojen päätepysäkeillä saakka, nähtyä paikkoja joita olen halunnut nähdä sekä paikkoja joista en edes tiennyt, sekä käveltyä ties kuinka monta kilometriä. Lähdimme aamulla yhdeksän jälkeen kaverini kanssa Fukudai-maen metroasemalle ja suuntasimme Tenjinin kautta kohti pohjoista. Tenjinin kauppatunnelissa päätimme liittyä jonon jatkoksi leipomoon, jonne on joka päivä pitkä jono japanilaisia. Sunnuntaina jono oli lyhyempi, joten päätimme kokeilla, ovatko leipomukset todella pitkän jonottamisen arvoisia. Ne juustomuffinit olivat todellakin uusi mielenkiintoinen kokemus ja maku oli ihana!

[On Sunday I was going around in Fukuoka after a longer time. I ended up going all the way to the last stations of metro lines, seeing thing I have wanted to see and things I didn't even know about, and walking for many kilometers. We left after 9 am with my friend from the dorm and took a metro at the Fukudai-mae station. We had to change metro in Tenjin and we decided to buy something to eat from a bakery that always has a long line Japanese people in front of it. On Sunday the line was shorter than normally so we wanted to try if the bakery really is worth of waiting. Those cheese muffins really were a new interesting experience and the taste was also wonderful!]

Päivän suunniteltu kohde oli Hakozaki-pyhäkkö, jonne satuimme sopivana päivänä. Japanilaisilla oli shichi-go-san eli päivä, jolloin juhlitaan kaikkia 7-, 5- ja 3-vuotiaita. Liikkeellä oli paljon söpöjä lapsia kimonot päällä. Tien varrella oli useampi torii-portti ja toisessa päässä pitkää tietä oli meri. Kahden ja puolen kuukauden jälkeen päädyin ensimmäistä kertaa täällä meren äärelle!

[The planned destination of the day was the Hakozaki shrine that happened to go to on the right day. Japanese had the shichi-go-san which is a day to celebrate all the children of the ages of 7, 5 and 3. There were many cute children wearing a kimono. On the way we saw many torii gates and in the other end of the road there was the sea. After two and a half months I finally ended up to the sea!]

Suunnitellun kohteen jälkeen kävimme parin metrolinjan päätepysäkeillä ihan vain, koska meillä oli koko päivä aikaa ja kiinnosti käydä eri paikoissa. Yhden metrolinjan päässä kävelimme pitkin poikin teitä, joita reunustivat kauniit ruskankeltaiset puut. Näimme myös kaksi baptistikirkkoa, joista toisesta kuului tuttu virren sävelmä. Lopulta päädyimme jälleen meren äärelle ja pääsin viimein näkemään myös uimarannan ja Fukuoka towerin lähempää kuin ennen ikinä. Ylhäällä en silti vielä käynyt näköaloja katsomassa.

[After the planned destination we went to see the ends of a couple of metro stations, just because we had the whole day time and we were interested in seeing different places. At the end of one line we walked here and there on the streets that had also beautiful autumn trees. We also saw two baptist churches and from one of them I heard a melody I recognized. Finally we ended up to the sea again and I even got to see the beach and Fukuoka tower was closer than ever. I still didn't go to the top to see the view.]

Kotimatkalla pysähdyimme Hakatan asemalla ihastelemassa sinne aseteltuja jouluvaloja ja joulutoria. Minusta on hieman hassua vielä nähdä tonttulakkeja ja joulukoristeita, kun lämpötilakin tuppaa kohoamaan yhä 15-20 asteen tienoille päiväsaikaan. Kaupoissakin soi välillä jo joululaulut.

[On the was home we stopped at Hakata station to see the illumination they have there. It was somewhat weird for me to see the Christmas hats and the decoration because the temperature is still reaching 15-20 degrees on the day time. Sometimes I hear the Christmas songs in the stores too.]

フクロウと力士 (owls and sumo wrestlers)

先週の水曜日から今日まで毎日試験がありましたが、楽しいこともありました。金曜日に友達とフクロウカフェに行って、フクロウと一緒に遊びました。私ははじめてフクロウから本当に近かったです。その鳥は手触りがとても柔らかいしていました。

Viime päivinä on tullut kokeiden takia keskityttyä kouluhommiin, mutta kivojakin menoja on väliin mahtunut. Perjantaina kävin muutaman kaverin kanssa pöllö-kahvilassa, joka ei paljoa kahvilaa kyllä muistuttanut. Mutta pöllöjä siellä oli. Oli pieniä pöllöjä ja isoja pöllöjä, nukkuvia pöllöjä ja hereillä olevia pöllöjä ja sitten vielä Hedwigin näköinen pöllö. Enpä ole muistaakseni ennen ottanut lintua kädelle tai olkapäälle. Vähän meinasi sääli tulla lintuja, kun olivat narun päässä, mutta paremmin tietävät ihmiset kertoivat minulle, että kyseiset pöllöt vaikuttivat onnellisilta, koska niillä on seuraa ihmisistä, mutta ne saavat levätä vähän väliä toisten pöllöjen ollessa "työvuorossa".

[The past days I have concentrated a lot on the school work because of the exams. But I have had also fun things in between. On Friday I joined some of my friends and we went to an owl cafe though it didn't remind a cafe that much. But there were some owls. There were small owls and big owls, sleeping owls an owls awake and then there was an owl that looked pretty much like Hedwig. I don't remember having an owl on my hand or shoulder before. I almost felt sorry for the owls that had a string on their feet but then people who know better told me that they seemed really happy. They had company but they got to rest once in a while when other owls were "on duty".]

ほかの面白い出来事は日曜日の相撲でした。福岡大学の留学生は大学からチケットをもらいましたから、無料でした。日本に来る前に相撲を見に行くつもりでしたから、とても楽しかった。お相撲さんと一緒に写真も撮って、うちに帰る時地下鉄の駅にも会いました。

Toinen mielenkiintoinen tapahtuma viikonvaihteelta oli Fukuokan vuosittaisen sumoturnauksen avajaispäivä. Kaikille Fukuokan yliopiston vaihto-opiskelijoille tarjottiin tilaisuus mennä katsomaan sumopainia ilmaiseksi. Tottakai lähdin mukaan, olihan sumopaini yksi asioista listallani, mitä haluaisin Japanissa nähdä tai kokea! Koska yliopisto maksoi lippumme, niin paikkamme olivat ison hallin takarivissä, mutta oli silti hienoa päästä seuraamaan kyseistä lajia. Tempo vain oli hieman hidasta, sillä jokaisen ottelun aluksi painijat toimivat tiettyjen rituaalien mukaan ja itse ottelu saattoi kestää vain muutaman sekunnin. Suurin osa ajasta meni siis odotteluun. Saimme kuitenkin yhteiskuvia muutaman painijan kanssa ja törmäsimme muutamaan vielä metroasemallakin matkalla takaisin asuntolalle.

[Another interesting happening during the weekend was the the opening day of the annual sumo tournament in Fukuoka. Fukuoka university gave an opportunity for all the exchange students to go to see sumo for free. Of course I was in because sumo was one of the things on my list what I want to see or experience during my year here! Because the university paid for our tickets, we got the back row seats in a big hall but it was great to be able to go and see this sport. The tempo in the tournament was still somewhat slow. Before each match the wrestlers had some rituals and after those the match itself could be over in seconds. So the most of the time we were just waiting. Nevertheless, we also got some photos together with some wrestlers and we met some of them even at the metro station on our way back to the dorm.]

ポッキーの日 (Pocky Day)

Ihanaa Pocky-päivää kaikille! Sain kuulla tänään tästä valtavan hienosta päivästä. Sitä juhlitaan 11.11., sillä päivämäärä muistuttaa rivissä olevia Pocky-tikkuja. Hieno idea! Pocky-päivää voi juhlia monella tapaa, kuten katsomalla Pocky-mainoksia, rakentamalla Pocky-tikuista torneja, koristelemalla tikkuja ja tietenkin syömällä niitä! Itsekin päätin juhlistaa kyseistä päivää nappaamalla ostosreissulla rasiallisen Pockeja hyllystä, mutta oli tuuria, että löysin niitä ollenkaan. Marketin Pocky-hylly ammotti tyhjyyttään. Paikalliset selvästikin tykkäävät juhlia kyseistä päivää... Ainoa jäljellä oleva maku hyllykössä oli mantelirouhe-suklaatikut.

[Wonderful Pocky Day to everyone! I got to know today about this awesome day. It is celebrated 11.11. because the date reminds the Pocky sticks in a row. What a great idea! One can celebrate the Pocky day in many ways, such as watching Pocky commercials, building towers of Pocky sticks, decorating the sticks and of course by eating them! I also decided to take a box of Pockies when doing the groceries but it seems I got lucky finding them at all. The Pocky section in the market was empty. It really looks like the local people like to celebrate this day... The only taste that was left on the shelf was the almond crush chocolate Pockies.]

Viisi kuudesta välikokeestamme on nyt takana. Luotan siihen, että ne ovat menneet suhteellisen hyvin (lukemisen koetta lukuunottamatta), joten kai täällä on jonkin verran tullut oikeasti opittua. Se on varmaa, että kaksi kuukautta sitten Japaniin tullessani en olisi kyseisiä kokeita läpäissyt.

[Five of our six mid-term exams are now behind. I trust that I managed to do pretty well in them (except in the reading exam) so I would say that I really have learned something here. I am sure I would not have passed them two months ago when I came to Japan.]
