病気 (sick)

Flunssa on häirinnyt elämääni muutamat viime päivät. Kuumetta oli varmaan jo viikonloppuna, mutta kuumemittarin sain käsiini vasta maanantaina illalla, kun kaveri kävi lainaamassa asuntolan aulan respasta. Tiistaina jäin kotiin ja keskiviikkonakin kävin koululla vain tekemässä kielioppi-testin ja sen jälkeen painelin yliopiston terveysasemalle. Aika hyvin sitä pärjäsi hoitajien ja lääkärin kanssa japaniksi. Toinen osapuoli ei ollut ihan varma, ymmärsinkö kaiken olennaisen ja soitti Kokusai sentaan ihmisen paikalle tulkiksi. Tulkkini kysyi englanniksi, mitä olin ymmärtänyt ja sen jälkeen kertoi hoitajille, että kyllä minä tarvittavan määrän ymmärsin itsekin. Ei ole ihan turhaa tullut opeteltua muutamia terveyteen ja sairauksiin liittyviä sanoja! Itseluottamus nousi taas hieman, kun huomasi, että lääkärillä ja apteekissa pärjää itsekseenkin, vaikka joutuisi puhumaan japania.

[A flu has bothered me for the last few days. I guess I had fever already on the weekend but I got to measure it only on Monday evening when my friend went to borrow a thermometer from the reception of the dorm. I stayed home on Tuesday and went to the school on Wednesday only to take a small grammar test and to see a doctor. I made it pretty well in Japanese with the nurses and the doctor. Though they were not sure if I understood everything and the called a person from Kokusai sentaa to come and translate. She only asked me in English what I had understood and then told the nurses that I had got everything necessary. Seems like I haven't been studying the vocabulary of the health and sickness for nothing! My confidence got a bit more up again when realizing that I can manage by myself at the doctor and in the pharmacy even if I need to speak in Japanese.]

Ihmiset täällä ovat todellakin avuliaita ja huolehtivaisia. Kaverini oli käynyt lainaamassa minulle kuumemittarin ja myöhemmin kertonut respan väelle 39 asteen kuumeestani. Kun sitten keskiviikkona menin yli vuorokauteen aulaan, niin respan luukku aukesi saman tein ja minulta kyseltiin, olenko kunnossa. He myös soittivat ja varmistivat, voinko käydä yliopistolla lääkäriä tapaamassa. Seuraavana päivänäkin he tulivat kysymään, onko oloni jo parempi. Lääkärilläkin kaikki huomioivat vajavaisen japaninkielen tasoni ja puhuivat hitaasti ja selkeästi.

[People here are really helpful and caring. The friend of mine who borrowed the thermometer for me told later to the staff of the dorm that I had fever of 39 degrees. So when I went to the lobby on Wednesday after 1,5 days, the staff spotted me right away and asked if I am okay. They also called and checked if I can see the doctor at the university. And on the next day they came to me and asked if I already felt better. Also at the doctor everyone was nice to me and spoke slowly and clearly.]

Flunssani takia "pääsin" testaamaan myös maskin käyttöä, mikä Japanissa on yleistä. Täällä näkee ainakin näin syksyllä joka päivä ihmisiä valkoiset hengityssuojat naamalla. Olen tottunut yhdistämään ne vain sairaaloihin tai todella pahasti sairaisiin ihmisiin, mutta täällä niitä käytetään paljon enemmän ja ihmiset menevät töihinkin maskit kasvoillaan.

[Because of my flu I also "got" to wear a mask which is quite common in Japan. I see every day (at least now during the autumn) people who have white breathing mask on their face. I am used to think those belong to the hospital or people wear them when they are very sick but here those are used much more and people even go to work wearing them.]

フィンランド人とお祭り (Finnish people and a festival)

Tapasin yhdessä toisen suomalaisen vaihto-opiskelijan kanssa tällä viikolla toisiamme lukuunottamatta ensimmäiset suomalaiset tällä viikolla. Saimme sähköpostia, että täällä on käymässä professori koti-yliopistostamme ja että hänestä olisi mukava tavata meidät. Tapaamiseen tuli hänen lisäkseen toinenkin täällä käymässä oleva suomalainen professori sekä heidän japanilainen kollegansa. Suomalaiset professorit osoittautuivat melko isoiksi kihoiksi ja he ovat muun muassa isossa roolissa Tampereen ja Fukuokan välisen yhteistyön rakentamisessa (ja varmaankin kiitos heidän, myös minä olen nyt täällä) sekä toteuttavat muitakin kansainvälisiä projekteja. Oli hienoa tavata heidät ja kuulla, että heihin saa olla yhteydessä, jos tulee tarvetta.

[During the week, I met together with the other Finnish exchange students the first Finnish people (if we don't count each others) here. We had got email that there was a professor from our home university visiting Fukuoka and that he would like to meet us. In addition to him, there was another Finnish professor and their Japanese colleague at our meeting. The Finnish professors ended up being quite big names since they have a big role in building collaboration between Tampere and Fukuoka (and most probably it is because of them that I am here too) and they also have other international projects. It was great to meet them and know that we can contact them if ever needed.]

Eilen lauantaina meillä oli poikkeuksellisesti koulua, kun korvasimme marraskuun yhden perjantain näin etukäteen. Mukava yllätys oli, kun opettajamme tarjosi meille lounaan tuntien välissä. Illalla lähdin katsomaan täällä ensimmäistä kertaa festivaalia. Muutamien pyhäkköjen alueelle oli sijoitettu satoja erivärisiä lyhtyjä, joista oli jopa muodostettu upeita kuvia. Kosteasta säästä huolimatta ihmisiä oli liikkeellä melko paljon.

[Yesterday we had school because we compensate for not having school on one Friday in November. We got a nice surprise when the teacher offered lunch for us between the two lessons. In the evening I went to see a festival for the first time here. Around some shrines there were many lanterns in different colors and they had even made beutiful pictures of them. Despite the little rain, there were quite many people.]

遊園地のグリーンランド (The amusement park Greenland)

Perjantain TA (teacher assistant) -tunti oli mielenkiintoinen. Kommunikoinnin kurssin tunti ei tällä kertaa keskittynyt englannin opiskeluun, vaan sen teemana oli draama. Toteutimme erilaisia leikkejä, jotka soveltuvat ryhmäyttämiseen ja uusien ihmisten kanssa läheisyyteen tottumiseen. Koko tunti pidettiin japaniksi, joten välillä (useinkin) meni ohi, mitä puhuttiin. Leikit olivat kuitenkin hauskoja ja toimivia niin aikuisten kuin lastenkin parissa. Yhteisten leikkien jälkeen japanilaiset opiskelijat jakautuivat 2-3 hengen ryhmiin ja suunnittelivat lyhyen komedia-juttelun. Selvästikin he ovat altistuneet kyseisen kaltaisille kokemuksille, sillä kaikki tuntuivat tekevän sen melko luontevasti. Luonnollisesti en itse ymmärtänyt kuin pari vitsiä kaiken seasta... Tunnin lopuksi kukin (me TA:t mukaan lukien) meni vuorollaan yleisön eteen ja puhui 30 sekuntia edellisen puhujan hänelle antamasta aiheesta.

[The TA (teacher assistant) class on Friday was interesting. The course of communicating did not concentrate on learning English this time but its theme was drama. We had different games that are good to make you feel comfortable to be with the group and be close to new people. The whole class was held in Japanese so I did not always understand what they were talking. Nevertheless, I found the games fun and suitable for both adults and children. After the common games the Japanese students were divided into groups of 2 or 3 people and they had to come up with a short comedy talk. I could see that all of them had seen those often since they all seemed so natural doing it. Naturally, I did not get almost any joke... At the end of the class we all (also the TA's) needed to go one by one in the front of the audience and talk for 30 seconds about the subject that the previous talker gave.]

Lauantaina osallistuin yliopiston vaihtereille järjestetylle reissulle Greenland-huvipuistoon. Vaikka olenkin tänä vuonna käynyt jo muutamassa puistossa, niin uusiakin kokemuksia löytyi. Mielenkiintoisin niistä oli ehkä vuoristorata, jossa menttin seisovilteen. Toinen mieleen painunut paikka oli muutaman huoneen läpi kulkeva talo, jossa oli -30*C. Porukka, jonka kanssa puistossa kuljin, oli järkyttynyt kylmyydestä, mutta mitäpäs minä suomalainen moisesta järkyttyisin. Kunhan vain toivotin muut tervetulleeksi Suomessa käymään! Parasta koko reissussa oli se, että se oli lähes ilmainen meille!

[On Saturday I participated on a trip to the amusement park Greenland that the university organized for the exchange students. Even though I had already visited some amusement parks during this year, I still found new experiences. The most interesting one was maybe a roller coaster where you stood the whole time. Another memorable place was a small house with a few rooms with -30*C. The people I walked with were shocked for the coldness but why would I mind, I am from Finland anyway. I just welcomed them to visit Finland! The best thing with the trip was that it was almost free for us!]

Pyhänä kävimme teeseremonian kurssin tiimoilta näyttelyissä Tenjinissä. Opettajamme itse oli näyttelyn teeseremonia-hetken vetäjänä kertomassa kaikista yksityiskohdista yleisölle. Eräs eturivin vanhemman puoleisista rouvista kääntyi lopuksi puoleemme ja kyseli, mistä tulemme, olemmeko ensimmäistä kertaa seuraamassa teeseremoniaa ja pidimmekö teestä. Jos rehellisiä ollaan, niin se ei vielä toisellakaan kertaa ole ihan minun makuuni... Pääsin päivän aikana myös osallistumaan Suomen seurakuntani jumalanpalvelukseen Skypen välityksellä. On nykyaika hienoa!

[On Sunday we visited exhibitions in Tenjin for the tea ceremony course. Our teacher himself was telling about the details during a small tea ceremony in the exhibition area. One of the older ladies in the front row turned towards us after having her tea and she asked us where we come from, whether it was the first time for us to follow tea ceremony and whether we liked the tea. To be honest, I still did not fancy the tea even on my second time... During the day I also got to participate on the Sunday service back in my home congregation in Finland via Skype. How great it is nowadays!]

Eilen illalla lähdin muutamien eurooppalaisten vaihtareiden kanssa syömään päivällistä erään yliopistomme professorin kanssa. Itse en ollut häntä ennen tavannut, mutta hän oli kiinnostunut tapaamaan ja keskustelemaan ulkomaalaisten opiskelijoiden kanssa. Professorin tarjoama päivällinen yakitori-ravintolassa oli oikein hyvä, vaikka osa ruoista ei ollutkaan aivan minun mieleeni. Itse yakitorit kuitenkin olivat maittavia!

[Yesterday evening I joined some of the European exchange students to have a dinner with one of the professors of out university. I had never met him before but he was interested in meeting foreign students and have a talk with them. The professor offered a dinner in a nice yakitori place and even though I didn't like that much all the food we got, the yakitoris themselves were delicious.]

Teacher assistant and model

Eilen oli uusi mielenkiintoinen kokemus. Oli ensimmäinen työvuoroni assistenttina japanilaisten englanninkielen tunnilla. Meitä oli 7 vaihtaria ja 3 hyvän englanninkielen omaavaa japanilaista, jotka olimme tukena reilulle 20 japanilaiselle opiskelijalle. Luokkahuone oli kuin scifi-elokuvasta outoine tuoleineen ja monine mielenkiintoisina videotykkeineen! Pikaisen alkuinfon jälkeen jakaannuimme ryhmiin, joissa oli keskimäärin 1 assistantti ja 3 japanilaista opiskelijaa. Pienryhmissä toteutimme roolileikkiä kolmella hahmolla: malli, taiteilija ja haastattelija. Taitelija piirsi mallin katsomatta paperiaan ja haastattelijan tehtävä oli kysellä englanniksi kysymyksiä mallilta. Todella hauska tapa aktivoidan opiskelijoita puhumaan vieraalla kielellä! Hauskaa ja helppoa aktivointia monet opiskelijat siellä kaipasivatkin, sillä englanninkielen taso tuntui olevan alhaalla. Esimerkiksi opettajan antaessa englanninkieliset ohjeet edellä kuvattuun tehtävään, monen kasvoilta paistoi ymmärtämättömyys. Kysymykset jäivät tasolle "mikä on lempiruokasi?", mutta ainakin kaikki puhuivat englantia. Tällaista hommaa on sitten edessä noin 3 kertaa viikossa jonkin aikaa.

[I had an interesting new experience yesterday. I had my first duty as teacher assistant for Japanese students on their English class. We were 7 exchange students and 3 Japanese students who could speak English well and we helped more than 20 Japanese students to speak more English. The class room was like from a scifi movie with the strange chairs and with many video projectors! After a common introduction we were divided to the groups with 1 assistant and 3 Japanese students. In those small groups we had a fun assignment with 3 roles for us: a model, an artist and an interviewer. The artist had to draw the model without looking at his/her paper and the interviewer asked questions in English. That was a very fun way to active the students to speak in a foreign language! And that is what many of the Japanese students needed: a fun and easy way to speak English. Their level was not quite high since for example after the teacher gave the instructions in English for the assignment described above, I could see from their face that they did not understand. The questions they asked were mostly "what is your favorite food?" and such but at least they all got to speak some English. I will have this job about 3 times a week for some time now.]

Tänään pääsin sitten olemaan mallina uudestaan, tällä kertaa kameran edessä. Muutama eurooppalainen vaihtari oli pyydetty kuvauksiin Fukuokan yliopiston kansainvälisyyttä kuvaavaa julistetta varten. On se mallin työ haastavaa, kun pitää esittää luontevaa kameran edessä sellaisessa tilanteessa, joka ei tunnu luontevalta! Mutta odotan innolla julisteen julkaisua. Toivottavasti on hyvä, koska se tulee olemaan esillä muun muassa julkisen liikenteen asemilla.

[Today I got to be a model again, this time in front of a camera. Some of the European exchange students were asked to participate on a photo shoot for poster of the international aspect of Fukuoka University. It surely is difficult to be a model when you have to act naturally in front of the camera even when you don't feel natural! But I am looking forward to see the poster. I hope it is good since it will end up to the stations here too.]

Toistaiseksi ainoa syömäni mausteinen ruoka täällä on yliopiston yksi ramen-annos.
[For now the only spicy food I have had here is one ramen dish at the university.]

International party and the end of the summer

Täälläkin alkaa kesä kääntyä syksyyn. Lokakuun alku on ollut poikkeuksellisen lämmin. Viime päivinä lämpötila on kohonnut kuitenkin enää pariin kymmeneen ja tuuli tuntuu (mukavan) viileältä, vaikka auringonpaiste on yhä kuuma.

[The summer is turning to autumn also here. The beginning of October has been warmer than usually. But during the past days the temperature has been around 20 degrees and the wind actually feels cool. Though the sunshine is still pretty warm.]

Viime viikon perjantaina menimme vaihtariporukalla Tenjinissä järjestettävään kansainväliseen tapahtumaan, joka kokosi opiskelijoita koko Kyushu-saaren alueelta. En ole nähnyt niin monia länsimaalaisia ihmisiä koko täällä oloni aikana, vaikka tapahtuman 300 osallistujasta enemmistö olikin japanilaisia. Keskustelin illan aikana monenmaalaisen ihmisen kanssa ja yllätyksekseni pääsin puhumaan myös suomea kohdatessani Latviasta tulevan opiskelijan, joka asui 4 vuotta Suomessa. Hän vasta olikin yllättynyt ja kertoi, ettei olisi kuvitellut puhuvansa suomea Japanissa. Tapahtuman jälkeen kävimme porukalla syömässä ja menimme laulamaan karaokea pariksi tunniksi. Olisipa Suomessakin samanlaisia karaoke-paikkoja!

[Last Friday we (some exchange students) went to Tenjin for an international party of Kyushu island. I have not seen that many people from the Western countries during all this time in Japan even though majority of the 300 students were Japanese. During the evening I talked with people from many different countries and I even got to talk Finnish there when I met a student from Latvia who had lived for 4 years in Finland. But he was even more surprised than me and he told me he had never thought he would speak Finnish in Japan. After the party we had late dinner and then we headed to karaoke for a couple of hours. I wish there would be those kind of karaoke places also in Finland!]

Tänään maanantai oli jälleen kansallinen vapaapäivä, mikä sopi minulle, sillä sain hieman flunssaisena levätä asuntolalla ja kertailla viime viikolla opittuja asioita. Japaninkielen tunneilla alkaa tulla yhä enemmän minulle uusia asioita ja kanjeja, joten kerrattavaa ja opeteltavaa riittää.

[This Monday was national holiday, once again. I was fine with that because I have been a little bit sicj and got to rest at the dorm and go through stuff we learnt last week. There are more and more new things and kanjis for me at the lessons so there is plenty of stuff to check and study.]

ショッピング (shopping)

Tiistain teeseremonia-tunti oli edellisviikon tapaa rauhaisaa tahtia etenevä. Oppitunti meni teehuoneeseen tulon kertaamiseen sekä välineiden puhdistusliinan oikeaoppisen taittelun ja pienen teekulhon "puhdistuksen" opetteluun. Välillä tunti eteni niin verkkaisesti, että sen tarkoitus on selvästi myös opettaa meille rauhallisuutta ja kärsivällisyyttä.

[The tea ceremony lesson on Tuesday was very calm and peaceful, just like last week. We spent the lesson practicing going inside the tea room and we learned how to fold the cleaning cloth and how to "clean" the small tea bowl. Sometimes the lesson was so slow that I think it was also meant to teach us to be calm and patient.]

Eilen aamulla heräsin aikaisin tarkistamaan, onko koulupäivämme peruttu taifuunin takia. Ja kyllä vain, yliopiston kaikki tunnit oli peruttu koko päivältä. Aamulla satoi rankasti ja oli suhteellisen kova tuuli, mutta Etelä-Korean kokoinen taifuuni ei tuntunut lopulta iskevän Fukuokaan, vaan kiersi kauempaa. Päivä meni asuntolalla kertaamiseen sekä japanilaisen draamasarjan katseluun.

[Yesterday morning I woke up early to check if our school day was cancelled due to the typhoon. And yes, the university had cancelled all the classes of the day. It was raining a lot in the morning and the wind was pretty hard but the typhoon (that was the size of South Korea) didn't seem to hit Fukuoka after all. I spent the day studying at the dorm and watching Japanese drama.]

Tämänpäiväiset tunnit keskittyivät kanjien opetteluun sekä kirjoittamisen harjoitteluun. Kirjoittamisen kurssi on mielestäni hyvä, sillä siinä saa rauhassa harjoitella opitun kieliopin ja sanaston käyttöä ja samalla huomaa, että osaahan sitä japaninkieltä jo jonkin verran. Koulupäivän jälkeen lähdin ostoksille yhdessä toisen suomalaisen vaihtarin kanssa ja kaupoissa pyöriessäkin huomasi, että on tullut varmuutta edes yrittää käydä keskustelut myyjien kanssa japaniksi, vaikka kaikkea ei aina ymmärräkään. Mutta voi sitä ihanuutta, mitä kaikkea Japanissa löytääkään, kun lähtee kaupoille! Esimerkiksi tietyt merkkivaateliikkeet (kuten vaikkapa Angelic Pretty) saavat pääni sekaisin, mutta lompakko ei kyllä anna kaikkialla periksi tehdä ostoksia...

[The lessons today were for the kanjis and for the writing. I really find the writing course good because we get to practice all the grammar and vocabulary we have been studying and on our own pace. And when writing in Japanese you actually notice that you are capable of using it. After the school day I went shopping with the other Finnish exchange student. When going from store to store we realized (once again) that we had got confidence to try to have the conversations with the salespersons in Japanese even though we don't always understand everything. But oh, how you are able to find so wonderful stores in Japan! For example some cloth stores (like Angelic Pretty) make me go crazy but I cannot afford to spend my money in those shops...]

Different experiences in everyday life

Koto-Suomessa on syksy jo hyvässä vauhdissa, mutta täällä eletään vielä lokakuussakin kesää. Lämpötila nousee yhä päivittäin lähelle 30:a ja ilmankosteuden takia se tuntuu välillä hieman enemmältäkin. Ilma Fukuokassa on aika hyvä, eikä saasteita ole taivasta peittämässä, mutta kirkas sininen taivas näkyy melko harvoin juurikin kosteuden takia.

[The autumn is showing its best back in Finland but we have summer even in October here in Fukuoka. It gets close to 30 degrees every day and sometimes it feels even warmer due to the humidity. The air in Fukuoka is not bad or polluted but we rarely see the bright blue sky because it is so humid.]

Neljä viikkoa on tullut jo asuttua täällä Fukuokan yliopiston kansainvälisessä asuntolassa. Aika rientää! Koti-ikävä ei oikeastaan vaivaa, kun on niin paljon kaikkea uutta ja jännittävää ja koulutöitäkin piisaa riittämiin. Suomen leipiä on kyllä ikävä. Täällä tulee syötyä vain yhtä lajia leipää ja se on todella vaaleaa ja aika mautonta. Mutta kaikki muut leivät (joita ei kovin montaa lajia edes ole) ovat paljon kalliimpia. Ja hedelmät ovat todella kalliita! Banaaneja saa noin 50 sentillä ja halvimmat omenat ovat euron luokkaa per kappale ja muut hedelmät ovat sitten vieläkin kalliimpia...

[I have already lived for four weeks here at the international dormitory of Fukuoka Univeristy. The time flies so fast! I haven't really missed Finland because there is so much new and exciting stuff here and lots to do for the studies too. But I do miss the bread in Finland. I only eat one type of very white bread here because all the other bread (that are not that many types) is so expensive. And the fruits are very expensive too! I can get a banana with 50snt and the cheapest apples cost around one euro. Other fruits are even more expensive...]

Koulu sujuu ihan mukavasti, vaikka opiskella saakin päivittäin myös asuntolalla. Tällä viikolla on useampi pikkutesti: kielioppi-, sanasto- ja viikottainen kanjitesti pistävät kertaamaan entistä tehokkaammin. Mutta vastapainona meillä on mukaviakin juttuja tunneilla. Esimerkiksi eilisellä puhumisen tunnilla meillä oli japanilaisia opiskelijoita ja saimme koko tunnin puhua heidän kanssaan. Esittäydyimme kullekin erikseen ja lopuksi pelasimme sanapeliä, jossa pitää keksiä sana sillä tavulla, johon edellinen pelaaja lopettaa oman sanansa.

[The studies are still okay even though I have to study daily also at the dorm. During this week we have many small tests: grammar, vocabulary and weekly kanji test make me study even more efficiently now. But on the contrary we also have very nice things on the lessons. Yesterday we had Japanese students on our speaking lesson and we got to talk with them the whole time. We introduced ourselves with everybody and in the end we had a word game where you have to come up with a word that begins with the same syllable as the previous player ended his/her word with.]

The campus area

Kun aloitimme opiskelun yliopistolla, niin olimme kiinnostuneita myös japanissa käytössä olevista klubeista ja "circle":ista. Ne siis ovat yliopiston sisällä toimivia kerhoja, jotka erikoistuvat ainakin johonkin tiettyyn asiaan, kuten vaikkapa jalkapalloon, cheerleadingiin tai korttien pelaamiseen. Meille kuitenkin kerrottiin, että joissakin klubeissa on todella tiukat säännöt, jolloin jäsenien on osallistuttava monta kertaa viikossa useamman tunnin treeneihin tai että uudet tulokkaat saavat hoitaa kaikki juoksevat asiat jne. Meitä kehoitettiin miettimään tarkkaan, jos haluamme liittyä. Omalta osaltani jätin asian sikseen.

[When we started our studies at the university, we were interested in the clubs are circles that are common in Japan. They specialize in curtain things, for example football, cheer leading or playing cards. Nevertheless, we were told that some clubs have strict rules which means that the members might have to attend trainings for hours many times a week or that the new-comers have to take care of different stuff. We were told we should really consider whether we really want to join some club or not.]

Ruoka täällä on pääosin todella hyvää. Itse pidän paljon japanilaisesta currysta, jonka tuoksu saa aina veden kielelle. Friteerattua ruokaa (erityisesti kanaa) on tarjolla todella paljon. Kuvittelin, että täällä tulisi syötyä paljon kalaa, mutta ei se ihan niin menekään. Ja salaattia on ravintoloiden annoksissa yleensä todella vähän jos ollenkaan. Joskus lihankin osuus on jäänyt halvoissa annoksissa pieneksi. Riisiä ja erilaisia nuudeleita, sillä pärjää jo pitkälle!

[The food here is mostly very tasty. I like Japanese curry and even smelling that makes me want to eat it all the time. Fried food (especially chicken) you can anywhere. I thought I would eat a lot of fish here but seems that it is not the reality. The dishes in the restaurants include very little salad if  there is any. And sometimes even the size of the meat is super small in the cheapest dishes. Rice and different kind of noodles, that is enough for sure!]

Länsimaalaisia ihmisiä täällä on todella vähän. Monesti kaduilla kävellessä tuntuu, että me 10 eurooppalaista vaihto-opiskelijaa olemme ainoat länsimaalaiset täällä. Mutta ei nyt sentään. Olemme yliopistollakin törmänneet kahteen muuhun eurooppalaiseen opiskelijaan sekä muutamaan länsimaalaiseen opettajaan. Ja silloin tällöin kadullakin kävelee vastaan joku aasian ulkopuolelta. Mutta se on niin erityistä, että kumpikin osapuoli hymyilee aina ja joskus tervehtiikin. Ja kerran istuskelin kampuksella odottamassa kaveria tunnilta, kun koulupuvut päällä kulkeva lukiolaisten joukko käveli ohi. He vilkuttivat minulle ja kikattelivat vastatessani tervehdykseen. Aikamoista...

[There are only few Western people here. Many times when walking on the streets it feels like we European exchange students are the only people from the Western countries. Well, not quite. We met a couple of Western students at the university and some teachers too. And every now and then we face some people who come outside Asia on the streets too. But it is so special that we always smile to each others and sometimes even say hello. And one time I was sitting on the campus are waiting for my friend when there was a group of high school students wearing the school uniforms. The waved to me and giggled when I answered to that. Quite interesting indeed...]

Huomiseksi povataan todella kovaa tuulta ja jälleen saimme sähköpostia, jossa meille kerrotaan taifuunista, joka lähestyy Japania ja saattaa sulkea yliopiston huomiseksi. Pitää aamulla tarkistaa, mikä on tilanne... Onneksi kävin tänään kaupassa, niin selviän huomenna päivän neljän seinän sisälläkin.

[They say it will be very hard wind tomorrow here. We got an email again that tells about a typhoon that is coming to Japan and it might give us a free day from the university tomorrow. We have to check what the situation is in the morning... Luckily I went to the super market today so I am able to spend my day also inside the dorm if needed.]

タンゴ、キャナルシティ、親切な人 (tango, Canal City, kind people)

Maanantaina illalla liityin kaverini mukaan tangoa opettelemaan. Viikoittainen tango-tunti pyörii vapaaehtoisen opettajan vetämänä. Suuri osa tangotunnille osallistuneista puhui hyvin ranskaa, sillä he kävivät samoja ranskan tunteja yliopistolla. Tuntui hieman erikoiselta kommunikoidan japanilaisten kanssa ranskaksi. Mutta nautin tunnista ja siitä, että pääsen viimeinkin oppimaan myös lavatansseja. Toivon, että aikani riittää jatkossakin siellä käymiseen.

[I joined my friend for a tango class on Monday. The class teacher is teaching voluntarily. Almost everyone at the tango lesson were able to speak very good French because they took the same French classes at the university. I found it somewhat interesting to talk French with Japanese people. I enjoyed the class and the fact that I am finally able to learn some ballroom dances. I hope I will have time also in the future to go there to learn more.]

Tiistaina oli ensimmäinen teeseremonian tuntimme. Käytimme koko puolitoista tuntisen lähinnä siihen, etttä harjoittelimme oikeanlaista teehuoneeseen menoa ja siellä liikkumista isommissa ja pienemmissä ryhmissä. Kaikella tuntuu olevan niin paljon merkitystä harmonian, kunnioittamisen, perinteiden ja etikettien vuoksi. Esimerkiksi tatamien reunojen yli astutaan aina vasemmalla jalalla. Teeseremonian tunnin jälkeen kävimme testaamassa kampuksen hampurilaisravintolan. Kaikkea sitä täältä löytääkin...

(On Tuesday we had our first tea ceremony class. We spent the whole 1,5 hours basically to practice the right way to enter a tea room and how to move there.  Everything seems to have so much meaning because of the harmony, the respect, tradition and the etiquette. For example, you have to step over the line of tatamis always with the left foot. After the class we tested the hamburger restaurant at the campus. It is amazing what we can find here...]

Tänään japaninkielen oppituntien jälkeen kävimme porukalla lentokentällä hankkimassa työluvat. Osa vaihtareista haluaa toimia "teacher assistanteina" japanilaisille opiskelijoille kannustamaan heitä puhumaan englantia. Työluvat saimme todella nopeasti, joten lähdin pyörähtämään Canal Cityssä, josta olin jo monesti kuullut, mutta jossa en ollut vielä käynyt. Ostoskeskus, jonka keskellä virtaa pieni joki ja joka on osittain ulkoilmassa ostoskeskuksen sisälläkin. Sadevesi melkein kasteli sisälläkin, sillä tänään on satanut kaatamalla koko päivän.  Matkalla Canal Cityyn pysähdyimme hetkeksi toisen suomalaisvaihtarin kanssa tarkistamaan Hakatan asemalla, mihin suuntaan lähdemme liikkeelle. Siinä seisoessamme vanhahko japanilainen mies tuli kysymään, mihin olemme matkalla ja hän opasti meidät oikeaan suuntaan japanin ja englannin kielensekoituksella ja kehui myös tiikeri-paitaani. Ihmiset täällä ovat niin ystävällisiä ja auttamisen haluisia, vaikka yhteinen kieli takkuaisikin. Hieno paikka olla vaihto-oppilaana!

[Today after the Japanese lessons we went to the airport to get permissions to work here. Some of the exchange students want to be teacher assistants for Japanese students to improve their English skills amd make them more confident to speak it. We got the permissions very fast so I went to see Canal City which I had heard about but which I still had not seen. It is a shopping mall with a small river inside it and some parts of the mall are not actually inside so that the heavy rain today could be seen and felt also inside. On our way to Canal City we stopped for a while to check which way to take from the Hakata station when an old Japanese man came to ask where we are heading to. He advised us with the mix of Japanese and English and even commented my tiger shirt. People here are so nice and helpful. What a great place to be for exchange!]

Ja mainittakoon jälleen kerran asuntolamme aula. Se on todellakin mukava paikka, sillä sinne eksyy japanilaisia ja ulkomaalaisia opiskelijoita kouluhommia tekemään tai muuten vain oleskelemaan. Tulee japanin ohella opittua myös vietnamia, koreaa ja kiinaa.

[And let me mention once again the lobby of the dorm. It really is a nice place since it gathers up both Japanese and exchange students to do their homework or just chilling otherwise. I am learning also some Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese.]

野球試合 (baseball game)

Lauantaina oli tiedossa Fukuokan yliopiston pesäpallo-ottelu toista Kyushun yliopistoa vastaan. Lähdimme asuntolalta pienellä vaihtariporukalla ja menimme ensin koululle yhteiseen aloitushetkeen. Saimme Fukuokan yliopiston t-paidat sekä pitkulaiset ilmapallot kannustusta varten. Jo pelkkä aloitustuokio oli kokemus itsessään, kun kannustusjoukkojen johtajat esittivät numeroita ja harjoittelimme yhdessä kannustushuutoja ja -lauluja.

[On Saturday there was a baseball match between Fukuoka University and one other university on Kyushu island. I left from the dorm with some exchange students and first we went to school for a common introduction. We got t-shirts of our university and balloons to clap with. Even the introduction session was a big experience when the leaders of the cheering team performed different numbers and we practiced songs and yelling for the match.]

Meillä oli bussikuljetus stadionille, missä sain todeta, että kannustuskulttuuri todellakin on erilainen kuin Suomessa. Kummankin yliopiston yleisö tunnusti omilla katsomonpuoliskoillaan tiimiänsä yhtenäisissä paidoissa ja omilla lauluillaan. Ja kumpikin yliopisto oli tuonut paikan päälle myös oman orkesterinsa säestämään ja rytmittämään ja kannustus oli jatkuvaa koko pelin läpi. Ottelu meni todella tiukaksi, kun viimeinen lyönti jäi ratkaisevaksi, mutta lopulta jouduimme tyytymään häviöön.

[We went to the stadium by buses where I got to realize that cheering for the team is quite different than in Finland. The audience was divided in two and both sides were wearing t-shirts for their universities and they were singing and yelling all the time. Both universities had also brought their orchestras there. The match was exciting but in the end our team lost.]

阿蘇山と熊本 (Mt. Aso and Kumamoto)

昨日友達と日阿蘇山に行きたかった。４月に地震でしたから、本当に難しかったよ。でも景色はとてもきれいで、みんなは楽しみにしました。

Eilen oli vapaapäivä syyspäivän tasauksen vuoksi. (Minkälie tähden sekin on täällä vapaa..?) Minut kysyttiin mukaan automatkalle määränpäänä Aso-vuori Kyushu-saaren keskellä. Kaveriporukkamme japanilainen opiskelija vuokrasi auton, jolla ajoimme Kumamoton kaupungin läpi kohti vuorta. Täysin varoittamatta tie edessämme oli poikki huhtikuussa tapahtuneen voimakkaan maanjäristyksen vuoksi. Käänsimme auton ympäri ja koetimme löytää toisen reitin. Jouduimme ajelemaan pieniä mutkittelevia vuoristoteitä ristiin rastiin, sillä useat tiet olivat yhä poissa käytöstä järistyksen jäljiltä. Meidät käännytettiin useita kertoja ilman ohjeita siitä, miten Aso-vuorelle pääsisi.

[Yesterday was free because of the autumnal equinox. (I wonder why that is free here..) I was asked to join a trip to Mt. Aso in the middle of the Kyushu island. The Japanese student of our group had rented a car and we drove through the city of Kumamoto toward our destination. Suddenly the road was cut due to the heavy earthquake that happened in April. We turned around and tried to find another way. We had to drive small mountain roads here and there because many roads were out of order because of the earthquake. The workmen made us do u-turns without telling us how to get to Mt. Aso.]

Vuoristomaisemat olivat kuitenkin henkeäsalpaavia, vaikka näkyvyyteen vaikutti massiiviset sumulautat vuorten rinteillä. Yksistään nämä maisemat saivat koko reissun tuntumaan tulemisen arvoiselta. Lopulta jopa löysimme tielle, joka kartan mukaan kiipeää Aso-vuoren huippua kohti. Noin 10 kilometrin päässä määränpäästämme meitä kohtasi melkoinen näky. Asfalttitie oli halkeillut ja katkennut järistyksen seurauksena ja suuret maamassat olivat vyöryneet satoja metrejä alarinteeseen. Emme osanneet kuvitellakaan, millaista sillä paikalla oli ollut huhtikuussa kun kaikki oli tapahtunut...

[The landscape on the mountains were breathtaking even though we could not always see that well due to the mist. That view alone made all the trip feel worth of coming. Finally we even found a road that was supposed to take all the way to the top of Mt. Aso. We had about 10 kilometers left when we faced quite a sight. The road made of asphalt was cracked and cut due to the earthquake and a lot of the ground had flowed hundreds of meters downhills. We couldn't even imagine how it was there when it all happened...]

Jouduimme jättämään vuoren huipulla käynnin sikseen ja päätimme palata takaisin Kumamoton kaupunkiin tapaamaan mukanamme olleen englantilaisen vaihtarin edellisenä päivänä saapunutta ystävää. Käytössä olevan tien löytäminen takaisin kaupunkiin vaikutti kuitenkin olevan yhtä haastavaa kuin vuorelle tuovan tien löytäminen. Ajoimme paikasta paikkaan välillä ohittaen pahasti vaurioituneita rakennuksia. Ties kuinka monetta kertaa u-käännöstä tehdessämme saimme viimeinkin työmiehiltä tiedon siitä, mitä kautta pääsemme takaisin.

[We had to give up reaching the mountain and decided to get back to the city of Kumamoto to meet a friend of one of us. Finding a road back seemed to be as difficult as finding a road to the mountain. We kept driving from place to place an sometimes passed by buildings that were really damaged half a year ago. When we once again made a u-turn we were finally advised which road to choose.]

Ystävämme kaverin tapaaminen jäi lyhyeksi, sillä olimme ajelleet monta tuntia vuoristossa ja meidän piti ehtiä ennen kymmentä takaisin Fukuokaan palauttamaan auto. Päivä kului pitkälti autossa istuen, mutta olimme kaikki erittäin tyytyväisiä mukaan lähdöstä.

[The time for meeting the friend of our friend was quite short since ee were driving for so many hours and we havd to come back to Fukuoka before ten o'clock to return the car. Most of the day we spent sitting in the car but all of us were happy we left to that journey.]

Settling down, struggling with the language

Eilinen taifuuni päätti jättää Fukuokan rauhaan pahimman myrskyn osalta, vaikka tuuli olikin aika kova. Teeseremonian opettajamme kuitenkin asuu saarella, eikä lauttaliikenne kulkenut aamupäivästä normaalisti, joten tuntimme peruttiin. Koululle kuitenkin päädyimme myöhemmin iltapäivällä japanilaisen arkkitehtuurin ja asumisen kurssin ensimmäiselle tunnille. Tunti oli leppoisa ja me vain keskustelimme englanniksi siitä, minkälaisia japanilaiset ja länsimaalaiset talot ovat.

[The typhoon decided not to come to Fukuoka with the full power but the wind was pretty strong yesterday. But since our teacher of the tea ceremony course lives on an island and because the ferries' departure was unsure in the morning, our class was cancelled. Nevertheless, we had to go to the university later in the afternoon for the first lesson of the course of Japanese architecture and housing. It was not too tough since we only discussed in English how Japanese and Western houses are like.]

Tämän päiväinen ilma oli todella ihana: ei ollut yhtään kosteaa ja lämpötilakin kipusi vain 25 asteen tienoille. Lisää näitä, kiitos! Kieliopin kurssin sisältö on edelleen minulle tuttua ja verraittain helppoa. Mutta uutta sanastoa tulee koko ajan lisää ja sen takia välillä menee ohi, mitä opettaja sanoo. Koulun jälkeen kävin lähimmässä supermarketissa hankkimassa sinne bonuskortin ja sitten salille reenaamaan. Illalla pakersin tavalliseen tapaan kouluhommia alakerran aulassa.

[The weather today was very lovely: it was not humid at all and the temperature was only about +25 degrees. More days like this, please! The grammar lessons' content is still familiar and pretty easy for me. But there are new words coming all the time and that is why I sometimes miss what the teachers say. After the lectures I went to the closest super market to get a bonus card there and then headed to the gym. I spent the evening studying in the lobby, as usually.]
